[SI] Moderately cranky Jim's Comments on B&W
Don't like it, don't read it, cause you can't unread it.
Jim Kramer Skip M: Very nice, but does nothing for me. I suspect that I would like it better if there were more visible detail, but I know that's not going to happen in this format. Peter Chant: Don't you hate it when a bunch of people get in the way of a perfectly nice picture. Bob Hickey: Get a scanner or clean the one you've got. This is way too flat and playing with it in any image editor to get the contrast back up will help immensely. I know you can do better (I am not talking about the content, but the quality of the scan) and I am quite sure the image on the screen looks nothing like your print. Bret Douglas: Wondered how you got the cliff shot with the D60, now I know. Quercus: A little flat, bump the contrast up. I do like the windmill motif though. The Dave: M&Ms what has the world come to? Don't like the burned out areas and the crack in the lower left one is distracting. Turn a light on; 1/3s at iso800? Doug Payne: I get it. I think I don't like the crop. more ground or a different color than black for the gallery background? Tom Hudson: It works. Needs something though, just not sure what. Ken Nadvornick: Fine shot, no bullet holes in the masks though? The story made the picture. Simon Lee: Classic characters, made me want to run out and buy a couple of hand grenades, a dagger or four and a fancy helicopter. Steve McCartney: Nice shot. The only thing I would have added is a steaming cup of coffee. Bruce Murphy: And the extra-effort-creative-thought award goes to.. Someone else. Walt Hanks: Very nice textures, crop is too tight for me, but a great pic none the less. Bowser: I'm not a big fan of B&W to start with, but I really miss the rust colors in this. Joseph Kewfi: Everyone, Elvis is dead; please stop trying to revive him. On a happy note I like how the strings and the sound hole are illuminated. Jim Kramer: This is just sad. R. Schenck: I'm still waiting for the shark or the octopus to come out. Christian Gatien: I find I don't like the focus point, I get what you were trying for, but I need the eyes to be more in the focal plane. Maybe crop more of the face out so it is more of a background item? Eric Quesnel-Williams: For me the second out of focus exposure ruined the shot. Letters would have been nice too. Even a "Kilroy was here" Al Denelsbeck: Oh Al, We've got to get you a different camera, 'cause if you's keeps complainin' about the nice camera I let you's use I ain't gonna let you's use it no more, see? Brian Baird: I think I am just scared. Yeah, scared with that creepy too much bass in the movie theater feeling. Matt Clara: Nice pigeon shot, bad person shot. Especially like the wing tip on the left side. Vic Mason: Intriguing, but why does the lamp cast such a harsh shadow? Nice tonality and shading. Paresh Pandi: Texture in nice on the trunk, but I would like to see more of the shape of the tree. Alan Brown: Submitting an archive shot especially on that we have seen before; for shame sir, for shame. Rich Pos: I've found that the bank shots have looked very cluttered in some of my recent photos. I think I would like a very tight crop at the base of the pillar just at the edge of the water fall. Did you ever get the new scanner? |

Bruce Murphy: And the extra-effort-creative-thought award goes to.. Someone else. As I've already explained. Without the camera I was planning to use, the shot I wanted was best represented by this cropped archive shot. I may well have a chance to go chasing it this weekend. Since it was obvious that most people were going to take BW-converted scenics, I thought I'd play with simple-subject abstracts. This should be a fairly easy-to-spot theme through my submissions. B |

This one had fewer people. If it had been quieter I may have moved in closer, but that would have involved standing in the middle of the street. Instead I hung around for a minute or two at the side of the street out the way waiting for least people. Well, it has people in it I will call it street photography. Oh sorry I can't, I didn't use a Leica... :-) Interestingly I find I have never really stopped to take a good look at this building. |
