Default Digital vs. Film...what again?!

Hi all,

Sorry to beat a dead horse here...or is it further beat the horse...

Just some questions...and would love to hear some opinions...

#1. I have shot 35mm film for years (99.99% Velvia) on my F4
#2. I have printed (not me personally!) 8x10's (cibachrome) from the
chromes and produced some really nice prints...nice color, sharp etc
#3. NOW, I also have a D100, and have shot billions (!) (okay,
thousands!) of shots at the high rez (3kx2k) and when I printed (ophoto)
8x10's, they cam out ok. Nothing more. So some questions

(a). It seems that the prints from my printer are sharper then the
prints. Is this the difference between between digital and print?
(b). I truely love sharp "fine art" pics, and want to continue doing
that, but truelly I have been VERY disappointed with the Digital end
results.

I've read alot about digital vs. film and meg size vs. film rez, and I
am totally confused. I've started to drink and beat my dogs. Okay, I'm
joking about the dogs! hehe!

I would love to hear what other have concluded etc...
As mentioned on this group, film cameras are getting cheap (at least on
ebay) and maybe getting a medium format film is that I want to do...

Now for something totally different...

Gigafilm? Has anyone used it? I love sharp fine detailed pics, would
this be the current ultimate?

Take care all,

~Kam (^8*

You poor, poor man....

I really don't know what to say..

Except start using Kodachrome and Leica...
Then you'll see the answer.....

Hi all,

(a). It seems that the prints from my printer are sharper then the prints.
Is this the difference between between digital and print?

It is the effect of sharpening (edge enhancement) algorithms. (Rodinal
developer does something similar to film, under some circumstances.)

(b). I truely love sharp "fine art" pics, and want to continue doing that,
but truelly I have been VERY disappointed with the Digital end results.

How so? You were just saying the digital pictures were sharper...?

As mentioned on this group, film cameras are getting cheap (at least on

I think film will stay around for a long time. The 2 biggest markets for it
(amateur snapshooting and photojournalism) are falling away, and in the
future all film is going to be rather like what medium format and sheet film
are like today -- a medium for artists and for professionals who need an
unusually high-resolution image.

Snap up those film camera bargains!

"Well thats what I'm currently doing (F4 and Velvia), my question is
truely, can I get the same with digital?!"

No, you're not doing what I said to do. Nikon and Velvia are decidedly
inferior to Leica and Kodachrome.
Toss the Nikon F4 and Velvia in the dustbin and come follow me...

Yes, I've wasted some time debating this issue, and never will again. Here's
the rub: if you want digital files, it's best to start with a digital
camera. Except if you're shooting a medium format camera and can get the
film drum scanned. Then it's worth the effort.

News flash: you dont' have to "switch." You can shoot both and still live.
Yes, it's amazing.
