Default 81A or 81B filter?

Hallo!

I intend to buy a filter 81A or 81B for my SLR. I want to remove a slight
bluish tint when I take pictures in a shade or on a overcast day. Which one
of the two is more useful for that purpose- what would you recommend? Would
it eliminate also that bluish tint on the snow, if I take a picture in the
shadow?

I know that both of the filters are designed to do that, I would just like
some advice from the experts - which one is preferred or more usable, or it
doesn't really matter?

Thank you.
Simon

I'm by no means an expert, but I'd go with the 81A. But these filters
are relatively inexpensive...you could get both and see which you like
best. Certain situations might scream for one over the other.

Why not a skylight filter? That should do the job better IMO.

They are so close together that you will likely not notice the
difference.

eg: If the target film is "daylight" (5500K), then

81A would be "correct" for a 6000K source...
81B would be "correct" for a 6300K source...
81C would be "correct" for a 7000K source... (cloudy sky)

(Hoya "Light Source Conversion Diagram", CAT 8810E)

All pretty close together. The "C" would probably be too warm in
many situations, the "A" or "B" would be sufficient.

(FWIW, I have only an 81A for shooting subjects in open shade).

Fuji's advice for Sensia and Provia film is for
an 81A to be used in day cloudy/open shade conditions.

Cheers,
Alan.

Simon,

Get a Nikon A2 filter instead - the world's best warming filter, in my opinion.

The differences are subtle, but I'm happy w/ an 81a. An
81b might tend to make people look a little jaunticed. For snow, which is a
different deal, I'd try a UV3, or look at skylite filters and pick one out
that was most pink. Put them on a piece of white paper for comparison. Bob

an alternative is to always keep 81a on when outdoors and shooting
fuji and replace it with b or c in exterme conditions.

Cheers,
Alan.

Galen Rowell used to keep skylight filters on his shorter lenses and 81A
filters as the standard "lens protector" on all his lenses 200mm and up.
For warming purposes I'd start with an 81A if it's going to be used on
lenses shorter than 200mm and an 81B if it's going to be used on lenses
of 200mm and up.
