Default Any P&S's left that still use Compact Flash (CF)?

Have some preferences for what I'd like in a P&S, but it appears that
all of the ones that used CF are discontinued models.

Anything still left?

I still use my Nikon 995 on occasion, it will only recognize 512mb of
any card. Don't think any new P&S cameras use CF cards. Doesn't that
guy who rants about DSLRs also includes the oversized CF cards in
that? I personnally like the size of CF cards, they have always seemed
durable to me. I'm about ready to see if one I put through the clothes
washer will still work.

I don't believe so.

Dangit.

Was hoping for something a bit newer than my current, particularly if
it dies of old age anytime soon.

Do you know that for a fact? While my 995 also has a 512 Mb CF, and the
manual (printed in 2001) only mentions up to 128 Mb cards - probably all
there was back then - I've Googled up type 2 CF cards and Microdrives that
claim to be compatible with the 990, 995 and 4500. Could this be a
formatting problem, or something to do with FAT 16 ? Have you actually tried
a bigger card and found it restricted?

Too many small things in our lives these days. Mobile phones you need a
magnifying glass and a pick to use, tiny SIM cards, and SD camera cards just
seem too 'losable' for my liking.

I'm about ready to see if one I put through the clothes
washer will still work.

It will, but all your dirty pictures will be gone!

I don't have a 990, but I have both a Coolpix880 and an 8800. The 880 was
my first digital, and the manual for that one also listed a limited size CF.
I used larger CFs with no problem.

If there *was* a new P&S available that still used CF cards, I'd
guess that you might want to buy a new memory card or two anyway if
(as I'm guessing) your old cards are either slower or have less
capacity than would be ideal for the new camera, especially if you
may ever want to use it for video clips. If re-using your old CF
cards is just a matter of saving money, you wouldn't have saved much
anyway. My old CF cards were quite expensive compared to today's
cards. I just bought a 2GB SD card two days ago, and it shouldn't
be too hard to find better buys.

True, my existing cards aren't brand spanking new, and while a few of
them are only 1GB ("less than ideal for a new camera"), that's only
half the reason.

Its not really the money, although if I'm going to buy more memory
cards, I'm going to spring for the 120x speeds or higher, which does
become a tad more costly than the plain vanilla cards one can get
cheap.

What it really is more of is the general convenience. With all of my
current cameras all using the same form factor (currently CF), I have
a larger total resource pool to draw from for some projects (ie, more
GB's) which can save me from having to tote a laptop and/or digital
wallet. Similarly, its impossible for me to pack the "wrong" bag of
cards for a shoot, plus it similarly saves me from having to wrry
about I'm pulling out the correct kind of card (fresh vs filled vs
small vs large).

So overall, it is just simpler if all my cameras use the same type of
card. To use a film analogy, its easier if all my cameras used 35mm,
instead of them being a mix of 35mm, 110 and 126 :-)

Wouldn't be my solution, but there are still a few P&S cameras you
could get that take CF cards.

How old it your 'current'? You may be able to get used (but newer
than your current) cameras that take CF cards, or you could buy one
of several new models having dual card slots, one being CF and the
other, either SD or xD. Some nice used models are the Olympus
C-8080 (I think) the C-7070. For new cameras, there may be a few
from Fuji, one being the S9100. These are fairly large P&S cameras,
but I think there have also been some relatively small models that
had/have dual card slots from these and other camera manufacturers.
Also consider, with a new P&S that uses SDHC cards, you could get a
4GB or 8GB card for it and may never want to remove the card,
assuming that it isn't one of the brain damaged models that still
doesn't support USB2 High Speed. So for one of these cameras you
wouldn't have to worry about taking the wrong bag, unless it's the
one that the camera happens to be in.
