If you are going to Hong Kong you will find most do not display prices in the window so you have to go in and ask. This makes "shopping around" very hard work because once in the shop the salespeople will try and keep you there. Be prepared for the hard sell, especially if are a foreigner/tourist. They know the prices in your home country and will try and get away with trying to sell at a very small margin under that just to try and make their price sound good. They are not necessarily trying to scam you they are just hardened buisinessmen/salesmen. However, if you can show yourself as an equally hardened negotiator (be prepared to walk out if it is not going your way) you can get some quiet good deals. I have bought a couple of cameras in HK, as well as various other electrical goods, and I have always paid at least 20% lower than I could have got these items for at home (I even bought an item nearly 50% cheaper). Also, they sometimes throw in extras like camera bags, spare batteries, memory cards etc... However, you will normally have to work for all this and you could even be in the shop for an hour or so. Buying electrical items in HK is fun as long as you invest time in doing so. Always buy known brands and always check the box before you leave the shop (there have been stories of people leaving "dodgy" establishments with empty boxes or boxes containing inferior goods). Also, make sure they also give you the correct language version, you do not want everything, including firmware/software, all in chinese Most items sold in HK have "international warranties". Most shops are honest but you must always have your wits about you. Also, if you do buy a camera in HK you will want to avoid the wrath of the customs people. Unpack camera, disassemble boxes and flat pack them, along with other packaging and documentation, in the bottom of your suitcase. Place camera and other stuff in camera bag. This then looks like you have been using it all along and took it with you when you left home. MC yep tried for a price off a dealer and they seem to think its too new and he market is ripe to hold the price at the RRP for the time.. Have made some enquiries and the back log is about 6 months. Even one dealer has increased his web price. |
