I can't see how the image quality is going to be better than the 5D2. I use
a 5D2 for top image quality and a 1D mkIV for tricky focus stuff and sporty
high frame rate situations.

By limiting the 5D3 to 6 frames a second they've stopped loads of action
photographers considering it. It's not much cheaper than the very capable 1D
mkIV. The 22Mpx sensor will no doubt be better than that in the 5D2 - but
how much better in the real world of prints up to A3 size? I appreciate
there's some new software stuff like HDR - but nothing I can't do on snaps
from the 5D2.

Canon have saved me buying yet another body by vaguely pushing at the
envelope - a bit. It must be very hard on manufacturers to make improvements
that make new bodies worth almost twice the price of the bodies they
supersede.

I can see how image quality will be better. The 5DII sensor was hardly
state of the art for quantum efficiency (33% vs 44% for your 1d IV, and
50-60% for some current models), plus Canon had an issue with relatively
high read noise limiting dynamic range at low ISO.
Now it's true that if you shoot to take ex-camera jpegs, or post-process
raw files without ever pushing shadows much, then the difference will
probably be minimal. But for other people, (presuming the 5DIII has
been improved to match performance of current Nikon/Sony sensors) it may
matter a lot.

Swing and a miss for Canon. 22mp? Too expensive and the D800 will be
a better choice.
The comments on Dpreview are varied.

I'm fine with 22mp. I'm more interested in hight ISO performance.
Unfortunately, the number I was most interested in is way to high.

Why I just ordered a 7d instead of the 5DMkIII:

1) the 7D gets me 1.5 times the resolution with my 70-300mm
lens at 300mm (and the lens, stopped down just a bit, is good enough).
To get the same resolution with the 5dIII I'd need to buy a 500mm lens
(ouch price and weight ... $7000, 8.5lb) or the 300mm f/2.8L II and
extender (more ouch ... $7300, 5.1 lb + $500, .6lb)

2) to get the same wide angle view with the 5D I'd need to buy
a new 16-35 or 17-40mm lens ($1700 or $840)

3) 5D does not have flash, which I do use occasionally, but not
enough to afford carrying the weight of a accessory one.

4) most subjects I take are static or near static so I can
usually afford twice the exposure time the 5D would need
(and would get greater depth of field).

5) the ultimate low-iso S/N of the 7d (caused by lower
pixel well electron capacity) should not be a problem.

Finally, the current price of the 7D is such that if I decide
that I really want a 5DIII, I can just buy one. (And by then
the price of it will drop a couple of hundred bucks in any case.)

But it was a good idea to wait for the 5DIII announcement.

Was it? I shot three events this week with my new 7D, and I'm pretty sure I
got better results than I would have with the 50D it replaced. I concluded
that the rumor mill had pretty much arrived at the truth (especially about the
price) of the 5D3, and it seems that I was largely right. ;^)

Oh absolutely it was right to wait. I'm not a pro. I only
take photos on vacations or when interesting weather happens around
here. I need to play with a camera for about six weeks before
trusting it in my hands. I've got time to do that before
the next big vacation, even if I had ordered up a 5DMkIII today
and it took a while.

I can't see how the image quality is going to be better than the 5D2.

Well, then wait till tests are done before deciding to buy
one --- or not. That not all MPix are equal should be
obvious.

I use
a 5D2 for top image quality and a 1D mkIV for tricky focus stuff and sporty
high frame rate situations.

And the 5DIII will beat the 1DIV in the tricky focus department.
So you'll only need the APS-H camera for sporty high frame rates.

By limiting the 5D3 to 6 frames a second they've stopped loads of action
photographers considering it.

Faster speeds mean faster sensor readouts --- and they're
already using 8(!) A/D converter units. Running them faster
lowers the quality; so 6 FPS is not a bad sign.

And then there is the 1DX. It must have selling points! 14 fps
is one of them.

It's not much cheaper than the very capable 1D
mkIV.

EUR 4200 versus EUR 3200 (24% cheaper) ... and the 1DX at EUR 6200
(only 48% dearer then the 1DIV). (OK, lots of preliminary prices.)
But since you're not using the 1DIV for everything, the 'not much
cheaper' is bogus.

The 22Mpx sensor will no doubt be better than that in the 5D2 - but
how much better in the real world of prints up to A3 size?

That will very much depend on how much light you have, if you
may use flash and how much your subject(s) move. Best to wait
for tests on production units.

I appreciate
there's some new software stuff like HDR - but nothing I can't do on snaps
from the 5D2.

Sure. But Canon is wise enough to allow different workflows than
just yours.

Canon have saved me buying yet another body by vaguely pushing at the
envelope - a bit.

Would have 40 MPix pushed the envelope enough? Yes? How
does that lead to better (max A3) prints?

What the hell else are you missing on the 5DIII then?

It must be very hard on manufacturers to make improvements
that make new bodies worth almost twice the price of the bodies they
supersede.

Please compare the yen prices for the 5DII and 5DIII as they
came out. You may be in for a surprise. Thank the US
non-economy.

How would you know? You've been wrong LOTS of times.

There's that socialist whining again.
