D800/700 high ISO samples.

From these samples, it looks like the D800 performs at high ISO almost exactly as expected by analysis of raw sensor data (by Marianne Oelund, Bill Claff etc.) IOW it's about a stop better than the D700. From DXOMark: "The true novelty of this camera is not its exterior, but what’s on the inside. So for our first photo, we aren’t going to show you the camera, but rather its sensor (which we are dying to analyze). A 36-Mpix sensor with a pixel pitch of 4.8 µm — if this sensor lives up to the promise shown by its smaller relatives (i.e., the sensors for the Pentax K5 and the Nikon D7000), then the Nikon D800 will inevitably achieve the highest DxO Mark sensor scores ever measured." Pre-empting the inevitable, the D800 is going to do even better than DXO expect above. Performance on a sensor area basis exceeds the D7000 / k5 by a significant margin. QE is probably higher (than 47% or so to perhaps the high 50s) and read noise looks like it's lower. |

D800/700 high ISO samples.

... [] Why is the green so drab in the D800 shot? Nikon could be going back to the more neutral standard image reditions of the past. "Neutral" is how I have my camera (and my displays) set. Why make colours more saturated than they are in reality? Unless you're doing "art", I suppose. G I aim for accuracy, not gaudy exaggerations. David |

I distinguish the colour saturation from the data encoding method. So I use "natural" saturation, but JPEG file encoding. Cheers, David |
