Zeiss Ikonta
As proud owner of two Rolleiflexes now I need some more portable medium
format. And I was looking for a Zeiss Ikonta, that seems quite good. I love Zeiss lens... BTW a friend suggested me also a Moskva 5 but is not the same I presume! Ebay is a good starting point to find this camera I suppose. Any suggestions? Any impressions? Is it a good choice to have a folding camera in my bag pocket? (Yes, it is always good to jhave a camera in my bag pocket, already filled with two more...) Thanks in advance ciao, Stefano -- Ed io imparo. |

Any suggestions? Any impressions? Be sure to get a Super Ikonta, they have a rangefinder that normal Ikontas don't have. Try also to find a post-war version, the lens will be coated and you will have a double exposure prevention system. Is it a good choice to have a folding camera in my bag pocket? Yes. The problem is, what is the size of your bag pocket? :-) Super Ikontas are available in different formats, from 4.5x6 to 6.5x11. All models use 120 rollfilm except the 530/15 (the 6.5x11) which uses 616 that isn't available anymore. The three usable formats are then 4.5x6, 6x6 and 6x9. The 4.5x6 is incredibly small, no bigger than a compact 35mm, but is medium format anyway! The 6x6 version is the most interesting, with the rangefinder integrated in the viewfinder and a light meter on the most advanced ones. It is quite bulky and very heavy though. The 6x9 version is smaller and lighter than the 6x6 version due to a more simple viewfinder, with the advantage of a very big negative. All Super Ikontas are available with a Tessar lens. The f/2.8 ones (available on the 6x6 version) are less sharp than the f/3.5 or f/4.5 ones. I have some pages about the Super Ikontas on my website (along with some other folders) as I have the complete family: http://www.lumieresenboite.com/colle...tegorie_link=3 -- Vincent Becker Photographies et appareils anciens - Photography and classic cameras URL:http://www.lumieresenboite.com |

Prices on the good, later models in EX, or better, condition are going through the roof in the USA. Condition is everything, so a blemish here and there can be worth a couple hundred dollars in savings. |

I like folders, they're good fun, but I've yet to find one that manages to match my TLRs in image quality, regardless of the lens. I suspect camera shake and the positioning difficulties introduced by the folding mechanism are the main culprits. Still, I have high hopes for the Ensign Selfix 820 I acquired recently. Good things have been written about them. It's just a shame that this time of the year is so dull and grey here in the UK. |
