iPhone 7 Plus and fake bokeh
So, two things that have been the holy grails separating smartphone cameras
from "real" cameras are things like shallow depth of field and interchangeable lenses/zoom lenses. With the iPhone 7 Plus, this gap just became a bit shorter. It has two cameras, one with a 28mm equivalent lens with f1.8 and one with a 56mm equivalent lens with f2.8. Using these two lenses, the software zoom just got a whole lot better, and the "2x" zoom isn't software at all. It's using the other lens. Not only that, Apple showed a "sneak peak" of a new feature they can do with this. Using both lenses, they can create a depth map of the scene, determining what is the background and what is the foreground, meaning they can add background blur in post processing. It's fake bokeh so to speak and it's a really neat trick. The smart phone (and the iPhone in particular) is killing the P&S market, and they just upped the game a notch. Northrup has a video about this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGp3JXKtHBM and some ideas on how to keep the enthusiast segment afloat, the pro segment is indestructible, but the consumer segment is all but gone, so what does camera makers have to do to keep the enthusiasts buying real cameras? -- Sandman |

I like it wide and the Xperia M4 has a 22mm equivalent so stick with that and the EOS-M in my carryalong, that with the Samy 12/2.0 gives about the same perspective in a very compact combo and the benefits of APS-C. -- teleportation kills |
