Default Oly E-520; lens 14-42mm stop auto-focusing after a while

Hello everyone!

I got a strange problem with my oly e-520 and 14-42 lens. After a while
it will stop auto-focusing at all. Auto-focusing will work for
(approx.) 14-24 mm all the time but it will stop working for 24+ mm
after some time.

If I turn off and on the cam auto-focusing will work again for whole
range of the lens for few shots and then stop working again.

Anyone got similar issue with their camera? Auto-focusing is working
alright with other lenses.

I tried to re-mount the lens, check the mount on body and lens if there
is some visible problem but found nothing.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It sounds like a loose contact in this lens. The problem could be solved
by sending in the lens to Olympus for servicing, but perhaps the repair
bill would be quite high compared to the cost of the lens. Is the lens
still under warranty?

First of all, thank you for your reply!

Yes, the lens is under the warranty - I bought it with the e-520 body.

I am leaving for vacation quite soon so I'll need to buy a new one
probably (no time for going through oly service :/).

Oh well...

Looks like it's not something I can sort out myself... I'll give
Olympus call to see what's their point of view on this one...

Thanks again.

While I was on a trip to Portugal, the main lens of my camera developed
a fault similar like yours (AF only working at the wide angle).

It's always good to have a second lens available in case the main one
breaks. DSLR lenses unfortunately are fragile.

Mind if I quote you for the "P&S Is Far Superior And Durable, FAQ"? It'll
only add 1 more to the some 189 other reasons. People probably won't even
notice this one with so many other points in P&S favor.

Agree, I have another lense (40-150) but I'd like to have wider range
than this one allows so I will need to replace the broken one (or shoot
in MF).

Just out of curiosity... Did you have a back-up lense on your trip in
Portugal or you worked around that problem?

What?!? The leading cause of failure in P&S cameras is when the lens
fails to expend or retract. Meanwhile there are SLR lenses that are
50 years old that still work as well as they day they were new.

Cheap lenses may be fragile, but to claim that SLR lenses are fragile
is just stupid.

I've never experienced problems with lenses of P&S, but this expensive
DSLR lens all of a sudden stopped autofocusing.

Only a long lens, but luckily the problem happened on the last day of my
stay in Portugal.

Hmmm... never had a P&S lens fail.

That was an expensive DSLR lens, more expensive than the body. And the
lens was less than a year old. Great new world, DLSRs are so "superior"
but their lenses...
