Default Return from the dead.....

I have returned from the dead.....Back into the land of the living. My new
computer is alive and well, and living in Salem, Oregon. I have managed to
contact all of my software manufacturers/suppliers and re-download
everything. I have also downloaded all the Vista drivers I needed from the
hardware manufacturers, with the exception (of course) of Konica-Minolta,
who went out of business before Windows Vista was a gleam in Bill Gates'
eye. However, I found a generic scanner program that works quite well with
my Dimage scan elite 5400II film scanner, so I am in business again even
there. While I was "dead", my email server, Comcast, chose to discontinue
supporting newsgroups, so I had to buy into another server. I didn't know
which one to choose, but Giganews only wants about $8 a month, so that's the
one I went with, at least for the present. I can always switch to another
one, and if anyone has strong opinions on the matter, please let me know.
2008 has been a terrible year for me. I won't bore you guys with the
details, but let me say that my computer has been in the shop for about 50%
of the time this year, and my computer problems have been minor compared to
some of the other setbacks of the year. I am really looking forward to
2009.......It has to be an improvement.......Bill Graham

Many of the people in the other newsgroups I read use, as I do,
news.individual.net. I've been using n.i.n. for over five years, and
have been extremely pleased. No binaries, but excellent as a
newsreader.

The cost is 10 euros per year. ($12.72). (The server is in Germany,
but that doesn't affect your feed. It works well for US subscribers.)
Very reasonable compared to other servers.

The only problem is paying for the service. You are referred to
ClickandBuy, and they will accept your US credit card and pay n.i.n.
ClickandBuy has a very difficult to negotiate process, but they are
completely above-board. I've heard many complaints about the process,
but no complaints at all about the reliability or safety.

Welcome back William... sorry to say you ain't missed nuthin.

Here is a Usenet server for $3 per month.....

http://www.forteinc.com/apn/index.php

I'm sure you're thrilled about the Democrats trouncing in Nov.

Best,

RP©

Well, I voted for McCain, but I really don't see much difference....Both of
them seem bent on sending us deeper and deeper into debt.....I figured out
that a baby born in the US today, comes into the world owing $34,333. Kind
of like original sin, except it's, "original debt" By the time they are 18,
they will owe over $60 grand, and the Republicans will be increasing that
figure just as fast as the Dems....

Thanks for the link. I better take advantage of it......My 401K is rapidly
shrinking away to nothing......Right now, My wife and I will have to die in
about 8 years, or we will end up in the, "poorhouse". My father used to talk
about the poorhouse.....I thought it was an obsolete term until a couple of
months ago......

Thanks, Tony....I'll check out that one, too......Right now, I am used to
fighting impossible websites.....I have been trying to join and download
music from I-tunes.....It is an incredible experience.....After I manage to
do it, I think I will start to make money as a Windows Vista
consultant........

Bill,

Verizon dumped their NG service as well, and I went to a company called
Usenetmonster. I chose them because they offered a decent package for low
money. Caveat: I chose them because I do a bit of downloading and they
offered a good quantity for relatively low cost. If you don't do any binary
downloading, there's some free services out there you might be able to use.
Anyway, I'm pretty satisfied with my choice.

Good to see you back. We need more people who will vote against corporate
bailouts.

FWIW, I'll just add my second to Tony's recommendation. I've used it for
six or seven years (it was free back then) and have been very pleased
with them. The Click and Buy seemed to go better the last time I renewed.

Yes, I started with them when it was free. Free server and free
reader (Agent). Both are now fee. They work, though.

You have a touch that I don't have. I wanted to use a different
credit card, and there doesn't seem to be any way to delete the old
card. Mine went through eventually, though.

Not just over the my super has gone the way of the dodo as
well, so have most of them here. Result: I have to work another
20 years to get back where I was 2 years ago. And the freaking
*******s still dare to charge me a "management" fee every month:
I don't need to pay someone to lose money, I can do that myself!
Try to explain that to a socialist government...
