B&H, Why All The SPAM???
Rita Ä Berkowitz wrote: Don wrote: Maybe you should target the real spammers offering you viagra and telling you that you have a Nigerian relative that left you £/$1000,000, blah, blah. I could care less about those guys since they get filtered immediately and it's not an issue. You miss the point. B&H is a well-respected establishment with a loyal following that gets word-of-mouth advertising from their loyal customers. Them sending e-mail isn't needed and will only hurt them. I would expect SPAM from Ritz Camera, never B&H. Rita Why can't you get it? It's NOT SPAM, it's customer relations. Your email address didnt get there by itself, you gave it to them. And if you read your registration you would have seen that they tell you that they will keep in touch that way. Moreover, they operate an "opt-in" registration, so you must have checked the box when you purchased online there. No even if it was an opt-out system it's still ok. Any store you go to sends you stuff in snailmail, so why would email be different. SPAM is unsolicited email that uses your email without ever getting it from you legitimately, and hey guess what- even that is legal in the US (not in Europe). As for the matter itself, I and most of the photographers I know LOVE B&H emails and mailers. Today for example I was notified about their sale. How else would I know about it. To sum up, dont be a whiner- you dont like it, just click the friggin unsuscribe link. it's much more efficient than starting this s***storm. |

B&H, Why All The SPAM???

wrote: Well, if you're their customer, it's NOT spam for them to send you emails. They have an existing business relationship with you, so by the legal definition of spam this isn't spam. If you don't want emails from them, opt out and be done with it. Well, the definition of SPAM is unsolicited commercial e-mail. Just because I do business with a company doesn't give them the right to send e-mail that I didn't ask for or is *NOT* part of the present transaction. I offer the choice to my customers the option of receiving additional commercial e-mail when I send their receipt/thank you note. Some "opt-in" while some don't. The difference is it's their choice prior to receiving unrelated e-mail from me. That's just me. Nope. Check how the CAN-SPAM act defines spam. If a business has a relationship with you (that is, if you bought something from them, downloaded something, registered on their website, etc.), they are specifically allowed to send you email. You don't have to explicitly opt-in to allow it. Do you get ****ed off at LL Bean (or whoever) sending you their Christmas catalogue? Not ****ed, but I do throw them in the trash without opening. Well, hitting the delete button is even easier than throwing a catalog in the trash (and you really should recycle anyway). -Gniewko |

All that means to me is that industry people have once again succeeded in paying off our legislators. Years ago, I subscribed to Time magazine as "Peter Garbage". P. Garbage got junk snail mail by the bundle for well over 10 years. I was always waiting for the phone call where they asked "Is Mr. Garbage" there so I could indignantly say "It's not Garbage! it's Garbaaage'. Never happened..... but that was before telephone solicitors. A coworker of mine, Raymond Chen, gets his courtesy cards under the name Augusto Pinochet. http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/ar...15/156023.aspx |

This is why I find it very strange that this is happening. It started a couple weeks ago. Don't know, but I get a few emails from them, but not often or disturbing. Most have been about special events - not sales of equipment. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (MingW32) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFFeiAwu4tRirKTPYwRAiEOAJ9eVuOe1YPRk25AyQpLOy Bz4b8oHACeJJWz /so/MSQ629jT06ELy8dDakc= =5FX3 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |
