Was this launched to prevent price erosion?

Seems like it was brought in to forstall the price drops we've seen with the Rebel.

Well that makes a lot of sense ;-)
Why not bring out a new film SLR, perhaps it's for D-SLR users who want to use film again. And being a film Rebel it's probably super cheap in comparison to the D-Rebel.
