Default Dean Collins dead at 51

Although Dean wasn't one of the shining fine art photographers who
have died in the past year, he was one of the biggest advocates of
sharing knowledge and simplifying ligjting, studio equipment and
photoshop techniques. His videos are on curriculums all over North
America and he personally developed many fine photographers who worked
as his assistants. Sad to see another good one go.

I heard that he was really sick.

Met Dean back in the early 90s. His seminars were outstanding and the
guy had incredible knowledge and talent. No, he wasn't a fine arts
guy...he was an illustrator. And one of the best.

Any web links to his work? Personally I don't know anything about him.

I don't have any weblinks to his work, he was more known for sharing
his knowledge and educating other photographers.
for at least the last 20 years I think he was running seminars full
time, producing series of videos that had more practical information
in one hour than a semester in college, and training assistants. I
think Dave Montizambert, who now publishes his own lighting books and
is out of your province was one of his assistants. You should check
out some of his videos from your library. He pretty much was at the
forefront of soft lighting styles and using coloured gels to create
mood.

If memory serves (and it doesn't always!), he had a regular column in
Petersen's
Photographic magazine...I think in the early 1980's, and the column was in
there
for, maybe, ten years.

Yeah, you are right, come to think of it. "Collins on Basics".

He also made that book on making lighting equipment with PVC tubing,
"Tinker tubes"
