Aiptek PocketCamX - Review

I like this cam its small light and some what easy to use
- I however only use the movie part - the picture part
is bad - real bad - the problem is not the camera its the
software built into the camera - no not the driver - the
firmware - inside the cam - the exposure, back light
and white balance are all automatic with no way
of turning them off - you can change how they work
- but that seams to make little difference - you can
forget about shots inside a house - they will be to
dark and a reddish tint - it seams that the AUTO crap
kicks in and makes the shot overly dark - even on
a bright day it some times kicks in and you get a dark
looking video or pic

The cam needs a sunshade - I had a lot of pics that
a foggy look from the sun hitting the side or top of the
cam - the pics ranged from as good as my HP 315
to really really really bad - there is some fuzziness
at the edges - as you would expect with a CMOS
chip - it has to be said that when it did take a good
pic its was real good - with good color - witch
makes me think that like I said its the AUTO
stuff that makes this cam crappy

- Lets talk video now
- you get 320-240 17-20fps AVI MJPEG
video with 8000Hz mono 4-bit IMA
ADPCM audio - on a 256mb SD card I got
39 min of video - thats over a Half hour - thats
one long video - I found out that smaller video
clips sometimes fill up the card faster

Audio sync is sometimes off - not much
- I found that formatting both the Cams
internal mem and the fash card seam to
help the audio problem

It said in the manual that its got 16mb of flash
in the cam and 16mb of SDRAM

The LCD can not be turned off - So I
mod-ed it with a small switch that I push to
see the LCD - the switch turns off the LCD
light only - makes the batterys last 3 times
longer - but dont even try to install unless
your good with surface mount soldering

The video looks good - depending on the
MJPEG codec used to play it back - It can
look blocky - and some times looks better
re-compresed - makes the video look softer

It uses a CMOS chip and and its 2.1mp or less
uses SD or MMC cards - Lens F=3.5, 8.5mm

Size 3.4inch long, 1.6inch tall, 1.2inch thick

For a $100 its not to bad - I just wish it would do
good in low light in fact thats really the only problem
I have with it

It also works as a web cam

If any one knows how to turn the Auto junk off please post
even if I have to open the cam up - Thanks

Here is the info on the chips in the cam

SPCA533A - CPU

CUO-L22 V.14 -- 39VF040 - 70-4C-WH - 0331147-D ----
4 Mbit Flash - Firmware

VDATA 40322B - VDS7616A4A-6 ----- Synchronous DRAM 166mhz 16MB

SAMSUNG 334 - K9F2808U0C - YCB0 - UPF796B3 ---- Flash Memory 16MB

I thought I would post this info - incase any one wants to compare this
to other cams - in fact it seams to be generic

It also seams to be - found out in a RC fourm

Dolphin Jazz
Slimcam 3200
Trust 735S PowerCam Zoom
CyberPix S-330
PressCam L220

I am posting info in hopes of some day being able to change the Automatic
settings - also so someone will not get this cam if they are thinking about using
it inside a house - witch is what most peps would do
