with me being on different medications , I'm starting to have problems with
me holding the camera good enough to get good clear photos. Yes, I have the
shakes now but sure don't want to give up shooting photos . I'm thinking
about looking into IS lenses , for a Canon XTi 400d . To start with I'd be
interested in a area of possibly 28 - 200mm range and see how that works
out . Money is a factor so I'm looking at something rather economical . Any
info as to what is a good lens , bad lense to stay away from - - any info
at all ! thanks

Sigma has announced an image stabilized version of their 18-200 lens. The
non-stabilized version goes for around $400 but there is no info on pricing
for the new lens. I am guessing the price will be within 25% of the
non-stabilized version. This will likely be the best bang for the IS buck.

I like the performance of my 28-135 IS (Canon).

In my experience, the larger the zoom range, the more
compromises that must be made by the manufacturer,
whether sharpness, f/stop, closest focusing distance,
flair, etc. 28-200 is pushing more limits.

Wait for the reviews. No 18-200 mm lens is likely
to be really great, with or with or without IS.

Canon makes a 28-200 IS lens I believe. Check the
reviews of it.

IMO, the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is hard to beat for quality and
bang for the buck.
It's served me well.

Why not an IS camera then all lenses benefit.

Because the benefit is small, and it limits one to certain camera
manufacturers.

Because the OP specifically said he was looking for glass for a Canon
400D.

The 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS USM is an excellent lens for the money, and fits into
the range of which you speak.
