I have an ist-DS and the QR plate from my tripod at hand. The thread in the tripod socket on the Pentas ist-DS is like most cameras today, a 1/4" BSW. I don't know where the other posters on this thread got their info, but it's quite surprising the range and bizarre ideas some of them have come up with. |

I don't know where the other posters on this thread got their info, but it's quite surprising the range and bizarre ideas some of them have come up with. The other responses are a problem of different methods of describing the same thing and partly a desire to differ on any subject. You mention a 1/4" BSW (which has 20 threads per inch) screw. This is correct. Also a 1/4-20 screw was mentioned. This is also correct. If you go to a hardware store a 1/4" diameter screw with 20 threads per inch is a 1/4-20 screw. One joker then had to disagree by mentioning a 2/8th inch screw with 80 threads per 4". 2/8" is the same thing as 1/4". 20 threads per inch is the same thing as 80 threads per 4". So all the responses are the same thing. Now with tripod mount screws there are two standard threads in common use. A 1/4" screw (which is a 1/4-20 screw that is about 1/4" long) and a 3/8" screw (which is 3/8-20 I believe and also 1/4" long). So when the OP asked what screw the Pentax camera uses, the answer can be "a 1/4" screw" or "a 1/4-20 screw" and be correct. In either case you are indicating that it is not a 3/8" tripod screw. There were only two previous posters, one of them being me and the other was trying to take the ****. The information I gave is correct. I specifically avoided saying it was a Whitworth (BSW) thread as this claim is contentious in some circles and may not even be correct, not that it matters much. 1/4" Whitworth threads have a slightly different profile compared with 1/4" UNC (1/4-20) threads but not enough to matter for camera use. Some will argue the "correct" thread is BSW, others that it's UNC. But both are the same diameter - 1/4" - and both have the same thread pitch - 20tpi - and both will fit. So I repeat - it's 1/4" diameter with 20 threads per inch, whether BSW or UNC matters not a bit in this application. Now - where did you get *your* information and what makes you think my answer was incorrect? -- John Bean |

I've only ever seen the smaller tripod screw size described as 1/4" BSW, at technical college and in most of the literature I've read. It (1/4" BSW) also fits perfectly into a standard triopd socket, so I've never had any reason to doubt it. UNC bolts and screws are also rather rare in my country, the three common thread types available are Metric Course, Metric Fine and BSW. The Pentax ist-DS certainly doesn't have a 3/8" BSW socket, which is the larger "European" style tripod socket. |

I completely fail to understand what you're arguing about. I wrote this: "Like almost all modern cameras it has the smaller (1/4" 20tpi) of the two standard tripod threads." So what do you find incorrect about this simple statement of fact? I acknowledged that there were two possible sizes - because there are - and made it clear that the smaller was required along with the specification. I deliberately didn't mention the size of the alternative - as you just did - as it was irrelevant to the question and likely to cause confusion. Incidentally the 3/8" 20tpi isn't really a "European" size at all, but a size very commonly used on larger tripods and heads to provide more strength, and on some heavy cameras for the same reason. It hasn't really been used on small cameras for half a century, and even back then it wasn't universal by any means. -- John Bean |

I deliberately didn't mention the size of the alternative - as you just did - as it was irrelevant to the question and likely to cause confusion. Merely to illustrate the possible other size that can be found on tripod mounts. How can "The Pentax ist-DS certainly doesn't have a 3/8" BSW socket" be even remotely confusing? Also, why take as a personal attack? Incidentally the 3/8" 20tpi isn't really a "European" size at all, but a size very commonly used on larger tripods and heads to provide more strength, and on some heavy cameras for the same reason. It hasn't really been used on small cameras for half a century, and even back then it wasn't universal by any means. Most of the older European cameras have a 3/8" BSW tripod socket, I have two Leica screwmount bodies and a Contax II which both are 35mm film cameras with a 3/8" BSW tripod socket. Also, a Zenit Photosnaiper with a 3/8" BSW tripod socket in the camera body. In this country, it has been mostly European 35mm cameras that have a 3/8" BSW tripod socket. They aren't attacking you either. |
