Quandry on 3 DSLR's
"fishfeeder@gmail(dot)com" wrote in message ps.com... I posted this to the rpd, first and then found this NG...... I have been looking at on line 3 10.+ MP DSLR cameras. Sony alpha Canon rebel XTi Nikon D 40x all with the "parent company" stock standard lens also looking for a longer zoom lens to about 300MM or so All cameras seem to be adequate and have the about the same recommendations. I have perused Dpreview and still cannot make-up my mind. I have not been able to handle the SONY, but the other two feel ok to me. any major faults with any of the above listed ones TIA, Howard Went yesterday to the camera shop and held them all. All were tiny feeling in my hands except the D80. I did like the Sony Alpha, though. It's a toss up. There's a lot to be considered, hand size being one thing that hardly anyone even mentions. I think all of the cameras you mentioned are great cameras, and there are a lot of high end goods out there that will do more than their operators can make them do or comprehend. I think I've settled on the D80, although I WAS leaning heavily towards the Nikon D40x because of the 10mp size, two Nikon lenses with it for $1,000 and Nikon's reputation. I'm like you. Confused with all the choices. Steve |

It is alleged that fishfeeder@gmail(dot)com claimed:
Sony alpha Canon rebel XTi Nikon D 40x [snip] any major faults with any of the above listed ones Personally subjective: I will never willingly buy another Sony device with card storage until they drop their proprietary MemoryStick and join the standard of SD. I will never willing buy another anything from Canon as in my experience they are spammers and sell their registration database to other spammers. They have consistently refused to remove me from their mailing lists, never even once even acknowledging my requests (I used to love their printers). I cannot make any comments about how well those cameras actually perform as I've never used them, and were never under consideration by me for the above stated reasons. I have the Nikon D40x and I love it. My kit came with the 18-55 and 55-200VR lenses. You'll want the VR version lenses on any telephoto. Important note: Nikon has changed the lens/camera interface with the D40 series. If you want the autofocus abilities, you must use an AF-S or AF-I lens. What's different, and helps bring the price of the body down, is that for these bodies Nikon has removed the autofocus motor from the body and instead relies on a motor in the lens. The good news is that AF-S/I lenses will remain fully functional in higher-level Nikon bodies so if you get the D40x and later upgrade to, say, a D80, you won't lose your lens investment. -- Jeffrey Kaplan www.gordol.org The from userid is killfiled Send personal mail to gordol If I Am Ever the Sidekick... 33. I got the Sony A100 body for $570 shipped and the two minolta lens used for $200. Add in a 2gb CF card and I'm a little over $800. |

The Sony A100 can use either its proprietary memory stick OR a regular compact flash card. I'm using CF. I have the Nikon D40x and I love it. My kit came with the 18-55 and 55-200VR lenses. I was looking at the D40 and D40x, the I preferred the Sony because it had the Vibration Reduction/image stabilization/anti-shake built into the camera. Thus, you can use any AF Minolta lens. In contrast, VR/IS lenses are very expensive for similar performance. |

In contrast, VR/IS lenses are very expensive for similar performance. That was once quite true, but it appears to be changing, since Nikon's 55-200mm VR lens is quite reasonably priced. This is no doubt due to VR/IS approaching commodity status, and it had to happen sooner or later. |

I don't know what kind of picture taking you do, but I am a satisfied Canon
Rebel XT owner. I have taken over 9000 pictures in the last year ranging from travel pictures to grandson sporting events. I use either a Canon EFS 18-55mm zoom (came with the camera) or the cheap Canon 75-300mm zoom that I purchased from Costco. Most of my sports pictures (especially football) are taken at the 300mm end of the zoom without a tripod and are then printed after cropping. They quality is excellent as far as I am concerned and as far as the recipients are concerned. I have registered the camera and lenses and have never had a single email from Canon. I haven't tried the other cameras, but like you, I studied cameras for months before I finally settled on the Canon. Tom "fishfeeder@gmail(dot)com" wrote in message ps.com... Cos it's not a Canon or Nikon? Actually the K10D is an exceptional camera but might not suit a beginner like the OP, no scene modes and has a huge amount of configurability, built in image stabilisation is icing on a very good cake. The K100D may suit better. |
