Default Backing up images from XD card when travelling

I would be interested in knowing how people backup photos from XD
cards when travelling without access to a computer. I will be away
from home for 3 months so will need to transfer images from my XD
cards to a portable HDD. The one I have has an XD slot but doesn't
download all the images from 1 GB disks. I have tied transferring the
files from the XD before the card is full, but found that many of the
last files to be transferred are sometimes corrupted.

Don't know where in the world you'll be traveling, but many US photo
shops can transfer data from common memory devices to CD or DVD while
you wait. I think even drugstores like Walgreens can do it.

I found the service available even in small towns in Germany two years
ago.

There are as many ways to back up memory cards as there are people who
bother doing it. This is true of any type of memory card, not just XD
media. Google for "xd memory card backup" and I am sure you will find a
ton of solutions that might interest you.

I don't use XD media, but I do shoot a lot of photos when I travel. For
me, the easiest way to back up my digital photos while I am traveling is
to connect a memory card reader to my trusty laptop, then read them onto
the laptop's hard drive, then I back them up to a small external USB
hard drive before I delete the original photos from the memory card.
When I travel by air, on my flight home, the laptop travels in a
separate bag from my external hard drive. I figure that I am unlikely to
lose two bags, so if I lose either bag, I will have my photos. If I have
time and adequate broadband Internet access, I just transfer the photos
to my desktop computer in my office at work for back up purposes, but
that can be a slow process depending on network bandwidth.

Buy some more cards?

Default Backing up images from XD card when travelling

I will be travelling mostly in the UK based in Scotland with some
trips to several countries in Europe. Last time I was there in 2
moinths I took 11000 photos, so I expect to take at least as many this
time. I would need a lot of CDs, and since some of my files from my
last trip were lost after they were copied to CDs because of bed
patches on the CDs I would rather use my portable HDD with built-in
card readers as well or instead of CDs. So far I haven't lost any
photos from the HDD. Because I can't copy the files from the XD cards
to my HDD, it won't complete the transfer, I was planning to copy
files from the XD cards by copying them to a CF card in my Oly C7070
then to the HDD. I found that using this method the video clips from
the SP550UZ weren't copied, even though those from the C7070 were.

The problem is that the SP4550 uses only XD cards. I emaild Olympus
support and they told me they didn't carry backup devices, so to read
the specs for any devices I was considering. The one I have has an XD
slot that is supposed to work with XDs but it doesn't, maybe because I
used 1 GB cards. I was asking for a suggestion, they apparently didn't
know of any.

When we were on tour in Viet Nam last year, a person in our
group found a camera shop in Saigon that did the transfer to
a CD. Be sure ot check the pix on the cD before oyu erase
the card.

You might also buy more cards, now that they are so cheap.
I just bought two PNY SD cards at Best Buy for $19.95 for
the 1 GB card and $29.95 for a 2 GB card. A 2 GB card has a
capacity equivalent to 3 CDs.

What would you possibly do with 11,000 photos of a trip? Just curious, as I
don't think I've taken any where near 11,000 photos in my entire life and
I've been here a long time.

PHR-250 OTG

note that it does not include the 2.5 inch hard drive.

http://www.macally.com/new/new_phr250otg.html

-works fine directly from the camera's USB port.
-has its own rechargable battery, includes a charger.
-acts as an external hard drive when plugged into a PC.

I have a 60 gig drive in mine.

I've used my Vosonic VP6230 and it has copied files from my 1GB Fuji-M xd
card. I don't know if it would copy the newer H xd cards however.

Given you already have a portable HDD, perhaps getting an xd-CF adaptor might
allow you to use your current HDD. Obviously whether the adaptor works with
the newest cards might be a bit of a problem:
