What is the big deal about LiveView?

: It is new tech and a big deal for DSLR because it requires the mirror to be locked up out of the way when using the LCD Liveview. On your P&S compacts you don't have the capability to view through the lens or a mirror so it is not a big deal. Liveview gives DSLR the ability to use both methods to compose a photograph. Next step is the articulating LCD. I love it on my FZ50, but the FZ50 is not useful at high ISOs (and is limited in focal length by the fixed zoom lens). |

Also, the extra brightness / contrast of the LCD opens up new possibilities for visually-impaired shooters... Take Care, Dudley |

Sorry to rain on your parade: it is optically impossible to confirm perfect,
let alone optimum, focus on the small screens built into live view cameras. The image will always appear to be sharper than it really is on these tiny screens. You can test this yourself easily, but that would require a discipline of thought and technique . . . . |

Many point and shoots will enlarge part of the display when focusing manually, which helps greatly. Take Care, dudley |

I can see the focus change on my 50D zoomed in 10x, rotating the barrel as little as stiction allows. |
