Default Looking for photo album/storage software...

I'm after something for organizing my local photos, but with a feature that
I've yet been able to find.

Most of my existing pictures are already sorted into folders in one way or
another: some by subject, some (particularly those from digital cameras) by
date, and this works fine for the most part.

What I'd like is to be able to have the software sort and display them in
one or more different "albums" without needing to physically move or, worse,
make multiple copies of a picture. Simply adding keywords and having the
album do a search when I want to look at a different grouping is half-assed;
this should be a difficult thing for something with a database behind it.

Take a look at IMatch on www.photools.com. I choose it because it
*doesn't* move my files and because it is using hierarchical categories,
so an image in "flowers.red.rose" will be in both the "flowers"
category, the "flowers.red" and the "flowers.red.rose" category. Meta
categories can be used to show images matching a given set of categories.

The only drawback with IMatch, as I see it, is that it have so many
functions that it can get a bit overwhelming.

Adobe's Photo Album (currently V 2.0) is what I use and it meets your
specifications and then some. I believe you can still download a free
limited copy from their web site.

Default Looking for photo album/storage software...

I posted this yesterday:

http://www.picasa.com/picasa/

Google purchased Picasa and is now offering it for free. It used to be
$29.95. An image viewer/organizer with slideshow too. I've been using it for
a week now and it's turned out to be a pleasant suprise. A sort of iPhoto
for the PC.

Worth checking out.

You should base your catalogs on IPTC descriptions and keywords. There is a lot
of software, which is capable as e.g. Protfolio or ThumbsPlus.
