Default Geneva

As I have said before, I have been experimenting with large prints (up
to A2 size).

I have learned some interesting things, particularly that what looks
right on a screen need not look right when printed out large, framed
and hung on a wall.

I have a daughter who currently lives in Geneva and while visiting
that city about a year ago I took a photograph of her trying the
acoustics in the side chapel to the Cathedral of St Pierre in that
city. I was looking for a picture to hang on the wall at the end of a
passageway already lined with pictures and decided a tall narrow print
was just what I was looking for.

The original dark and murky NEF file may be downloaded from this
album:

Both images in the album are produced with DxO. I didn't have to do
anything much to the color or lighting settings but concentrated on
the geometrical distortions. The first time round I did only a little
to get rid of perspective effects and a noticeable vertical taper
remained. When viewed on a table this was universally criticised.

After receiving all the flack I made another print, this time with all
the verticals printed vertical. "That's better" they all said when
viewing this one on a table, so I framed it. After a week I swapped
them around.

Which one do you think was best regarded? That's right; it was the
tapered print that was originally rejected.

The print was hung with my daughter at about eye level. The absence of
perspective distortion made the second print look most peculiar and
some people even thought it flared out at the top. Leaving some of the
inwards taper at the top made the print appear more natural and that's
the version which is now in the frame.

Eric Stevens
