I don't intend to "create memorable images" or take portraits, just want
something I can "whip" out of the pocket and take a snapshot.
Preferably not over $250. I had a Canon Powershot SD 780 that served me
well but I dropped it...disastrously. :-(
*small* is the key word here.
Any recommendations?

Another SD 780, second hand. Guaranteed to meet all your requirements.

As a pocket camera I like my Canon A-1300, which has the optical finder
that I have mentioned as well as a 5x zoom. Is it still made? My first
of such cameras was a Nikon but it just wore out out and emitted
groaning noises every time it extended the lens on being turned on.

That might be the route I'll have to take but it'll be a last resort.
Still shopping.

I advised a friend that a Canon PowerShot SX220 would suit him and he seems very pleased with it, under £100 in the UK now was £150 before xmas.
It was the 14X optical zoom that was the intial attraction and the 3" LCD.
I'm not too sure how well it bounces though ;-)

He's a gardener and just needed to take snaps of things before and after for customers and publicity.

I have an SX260 but it's just a bit larger than what I want to carry
around.

Olympus makes a line called the "Tough" that is supposed to be able to
take a bit of abuse.

A minor problem with "rugged" cameras is that they are not the smallest
available and their zoom ranges are often on the small side. I could
also use some sort of warning that a camera has fallen onto to a
carpeted airport floor. I've only lost one camera so far that way but
that's enough!

"Tough" is not necessarily high on my list.
At the moment this one is:

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX70

Thanks for the input.
