Default Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 or 1.7/50 for my Contax ?

Hello,

I can't decide between the Zeiss Planar T* 1.4/50 and the T* 1.7/50 for my
new Contax Aria.

In Photodo (www.photodo.com/nav/prodindex.html) 50/1.7 (4.6/5) has superior
MTF score than 50/1.4 (4.5/5) but in Photozone (www.photozone.de), 50/1.4 is
better than 50/1.7 (4.44/5 for the 1.4 and 4.04/5 for the 1.7).

The 50/1.7 is cheaper and lighter but which of both has the better optical
performance?

Thanks,

Pierre.

The 1.7 generally comes out better in measurements. Most users agree
that the 1.4 produces a more beautiful image.
There are many more parameters involved than just
sharpness/contrast/distortion/vignetting in forming an image.

Both are excellent lenses, but the 1.4 adds a touch of magic...

Neither. Get a Leicaflex R8/R9 and either the Summilux-R or Summicton-R.

I have both lenses and use one on my Contax RX and the other on my 167
and I can't see any difference in the two lenses. If you think you
will need a faster lens, get the 1.4. Otherwise I think you'll be
happy with the 1.7.

Hmmmmm......

I haven't compared the Zeiss and Leitz/Leica 50's directly, but have the
the 35's and...
The Zeiss 35/1.4 EATS the Summicron 35/2.0 (pre-Asph).
The Leitz/Leica is an excellent lens, but the Zeiss has that touch of
magic I mentioned earlier.
(to be honest I can see no difference between the Zeiss 35/2.8 and the
Leitz/Leica 35/2.0; both are top-notch lenses but lack the atmosphere of
the truly greats)
