Mastering a Branch of History
Amateur Photographer Has Focused On Decades of the National Christmas Tree

By Timothy Dwyer
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, December 21, 2006; Page A01

Each year since 1963, Aldon D. Nielsen, 84, has taken pictures of the
National Christmas Tree. He's trudged out there in the snow and sleet
and rain, on frigid nights and perfectly clear star-kissed nights. He
has photographed fat trees, skinny trees and one tree that had to be
surgically repaired because the train carrying it to Washington derailed.

*snip*

You post brings to mind a somewhat related bit of trivia. I grew up in
Wooster, Ohio. The cemetery south of town is were Fred Imgard is buried.
He brought the Christmas tree tradition with him when he immigrated to the
U.S.. In 1847, he erected the first Christmas tree in North America. When
I was living in Wooster, there was always a Christmas tree placed near his
grave as a remembrance of what he began. I assume that tradition carries
on today but I can't be sure because I've been away from Wooster for a long
time now.

He'd better be careful. You pull that crap today and you're likely to
be beaten and hauled away as a potential terrorist threat.
