Anyone been to Gambell, Alaska?
Has anyone photographed or even visited this small Native village, which is on
St. Lawrence Island about 40 miles from Siberia? A birder I met (but don't have any contact info for) told me he took a birding tour there and saw hundreds of thousands of seabirds each day plus many rare strays. The birders go to pad their life lists since a lot of Asian strays get blown over from Siberia but I wanted to try it for photography after reading a description Kenn Kaufmann wrote 30 years ago. I'm trying to get at least a few steps off the well-worn path between Denali and Katmai next year and try something radically different, and this place looks like it's definitely radically different Anyway I'd need the name of a local villager I could stay with and possibly rent an ATV from, also any info on getting a native with a boat to take me out in the PM when supposedly half a million seabirds fly by in good light. I'll be in Nome in June photographing nesting arctic birds and thought I'd try to hit Gambell for a couple days since it's only a 2-3 hr charter flight from Nome. Any help would be appreciated.
