Another reject of a "Historic Building" photo.

Interesting structure, but not a particularly interesting photo. The
only Photoshopping that was done was adding lace curtains in the
windows that were reflecting the light. (See the RAW file)

If I liked the photo more, I'd take out the chimney because just
doesn't look right there.

This is one of those photos where framing the original shot, and
cropping the result, is difficult. The entire building was not really
frameable. There was a clutter of cars and some landscaping equipment
in the driveway.

How to crop (it had to be 10" x 8") was restrictive.

Oh well!
First to ACR for some tweaks, sharpening, and 'Upright Filter' (A).
Open in PS.
Next to NIK Dfine followed by some selective brush work in the clouds
using NIK Color Efex Pro.
Converted to an Acros B&W, film simulation using AlienSkin ExposureX.
Finally your 10"x8" crop.

It is still a reject, but a good practice piece. Thanks.

You do like turbulent sky! That's a constant with you, and one I
don't agree with. This isn't a photograph about sky. It's a
photograph of a house.

Usually I go along with your versions, but not this time. You have
let structure at the left remain that doesn't add, but does detract.
Too much sky, and over-treated sky.

Over-cooked sky is a pet peeve of mine. I can see if it you are
trying to make an old house look spooky, or if the photo is
storm-related, but generally the sky should not be something that
jumps out at you and competes with the rest of the photo.

The problem with Photoshop is that we learn techniques - as you have
using NIK Color Efex Pro - but use them when they don't add to the
image.

The time should have been spent on the window treatment. The front
windows and the two tower windows are as distracting as missing teeth.

I also prefer the crop that cuts off the lower part just below the
window line. Showing the just the tops of the first floor windows is
like cutting off feet of a standing figure.

All above personal taste, of course.

However, we have established out of the gate it was a reject, so
nothing really matters.
