Well, it hasn't reached the level of the 6mm fisheye (or has it?)
but I remember five years ago seeing this for $4000 in a local
camera store. A lot of these very rare lenses are appreciating a
lot.

Uh, the Nikon 6mm f2.8 fisheye goes for about $150,000 when available.

another for $42k and listing ended early:

there's another one that pops up from time to time for around $90k from
a guy in bakersfield, california, if i recall. it hasn't sold either.

There were two versions, the AI and non-AI versions, the non-AI is the one that
most collectors want if I remember correctly, maybe that is why there's a price
difference, or maybe it's because of the quality of the lenses at time of sell.

just because one sold at that price does not mean that's the normal
price.

How do you define the normal price then. ?

the $160k is clearly an outlier.

two others did not sell for 1/3rd that price.

the plural of anecdote is not data.

Why would somebody pay that much money for a lens?

Or to put in into other terms, is there a business case for spending
150K on a lens?

not everything needs a business case.

they're a collector and they have enough money to spend on it.

people spend far more than that on less useful things.
