Hi! I'm after some advise on the best camera in the 4-5mp range for close
up work. I do a lot of close up photography of technical parts etc. This
usually involves flash work on parts ranging in size from 1 to 10cm @ about
a distance of 5-10cm.

Price should be under $2K. Not sure if there's much in the way of compact
digital cameras that are good for close up work, or if I need to go to a SLR
with specific macro lens.

You most certainly should go DSLR for the macro work you described.
The lense is the most important variable in a macro shot. The Sigma AF
105/2.8 EX Macro is the best macro lense money can buy, and the price
is very reasonable. Coupled with the Sigma SD10 body, you have an
unbeatable combination. Sure, this lense is available for third party
inferior bodies (Canon, Nikon) but why not take advantage of the fine
optics of this lense by using in in its native platform. Third party
bodies will not fully take advantage of the fine optics of this great
lense.

The Sigma SD10 gives you 10.3 megapixels of stunning resolution, the
only true colour sensor (Sigma uses 3 colour Foveon sensors, other
manufacturers use grayscale sensors and approximate colour during
processing), and camera-shake stoppage so you can do macros without a
tripod at conservatively slow shutter speeds.

Apart from the fact that this is biased, partisan bull**** (on which I
agree with the majority of other respondents), why would anyone listen
to a man who is so photographically ill-informed that he does not know
how to spell "lens".

I have used my EOS 10D quite a lot for macro work with an EF 100mm f/2.8
macro lens; it is an excellent combination, with good, sharp photos free
of visible fringing and capable of big enlargements. If that is a bit
outside your range, consider the 300D instead - I have never used one;
it seems to be less solidly constructed and less versatile, but offers
the same basic image quality.
