Do circular polarizers actually work?

So now we know. You don't know how to use a circular polarizer.

To start with, if you use TTL metering or AF you will need a CPF,
because if the light is linearly polarized it renders the metering
and/or the AF ineffective. Then, since you should be using a CPF you
are going to have to tune or rotate the CPF to optimize the effect
whenever you change position depending on direction of light source.

....and remember, a CPL is just like any other tool, it might not be
useful in all situations.

it typically affects metering much more than af.

for mirrorless, a cpl is not needed.

The polarizer doesn't work if the sun is directly in front or behind you.
It works best at 90 degrees to the sun.

It looks silly, you get part of the sky in a shot considerably lighter than the other. Like there was some coating error in a film emulsion.

True - very much so with wide / ultra wide.

It's a reason to not pay crazy prices for multicoated polarising
filters, as in the conditions where it's going to be effective, then
flare isn't a problem, in conditions where flare will be a problem - you
shouldn't be using the filter anyway.
