Default enlarging photos

Is it better to enlarge a photo from a negative then scan it,
crop then print out, rather than scan a 4x6 then enlarge & crop
then print it? Should I let the lab crop?

I am concerned with grain in photos enlarged from ISO400&800 negatives.
On 4x6 I could hardly see it. I suppose enlarging
scanned 4x6's on computer would produce some noise too.

For best quality, scan the negative, not a print.

Scan the negative.
If you only need a part of it, scan only the portion you need using
higher resolution.

To answer your question, your best bet is to take your negative and a 4x6
print to a pro shop (a places that develops and prints for professionals).
Use a piece of thin tissue paper overlayed (not toilet paper or kleenex) on
the 4x6 with the area you want cropped out of the image cut out of the
tissue paper. Or, simply mark up the 4x6 with crop lines. Ask them for a
print of the cropped area printed to your print size specifications.
Alternatively, yes, have them print the 8x10 and scan away to get your
cropped portion. Enlarging an area of the scanned 4x6 is the least
preferred method for achieving your results. If you plan on doing this a
lot, you might want to consider purchasing a dedicated film scanner such as
those produced by Nikon and Minolta.

There is no way a scan from a print will give you more detail or less
noise than a scan from a negative.

The benefits of scanning a print are ease and lower price.
