Default EOS 40D picture style question

I noticed in my 40D user's manual that the sharpness parameter is a notch
higher in the landscape style than the standard style (which is where I
leave it set). Am I losing some of the potential resolution with the
standard setting, or does landscape just apply a "sharpening" effect.

Thanks.

You're probably not going to like this answer...

Put the camera in a tripod, focus the lens carefully, switch to manual
focus (if it's not already there), and take a picture at each of the
sharpness levels. Now compare. Please do tell us what you find.

You will like this answer... less...

Yes, it is just a sharpening effect, but it is done with the RAW data
from the image and is only applied to the JPEG generated in camera; so
you may be losing data if your pictures are sharpened or you may be
generating "extra" data with sharpening effects.

Many people have found that this is the "best" answer...

Shoot RAW and make the sharpening decision after the image is captured
back on your computer when you can examine the image in detail and
decide the final output (size, print, screen, etc.)

Thanks. I'm shooting in RAW all the time, so it looks like it's a non-issue
for me.

If you are shooting RAW the only thing on camera that matters is
exposure, even then you have at least a stop to play with.
