Missed Opportunities
This Saturday morning I took my youngest down to the Ski Boat Club on the
beach for a birthday party. While we were sitting around a yellow-billed Kite came down on a thermal about 10m above us and hovered there in the same spot for at least 15 minutes, only occasionally flapping his wings to get back up into the off-shore breeze. He was looking for scraps from the BBQ. At one point the bird was directly above me and I was going nuts because my main kit (D70 with the 70-200mm f/2.8) was sitting at home, charging for the afternoon rugby match I was going to shoot. All I had with me was my Canon F1 with 50mm & 28mm lenses and Kodak T400CN. Arrrrggghh!!!! Moments like that don't happen often and I guess this was one of those I have to chalk up to missed opportunites. And my trip to Prague was full of shooting opportunities, except I was only sober for some of them. Oh, and my entire family vacation- designed for elderly folks- to Scotland would have been great for photos if the coach driver had ever wanted to stop the coach. I have visited my sister in South Africa a couple of times, and each time we took a safari trip, with my brother-in-law doing all of the driving. He's not known for his patience, and a lot of great photo opportunities were missed because of his drive to get from point A to point B in the shortest time possible. I decided that if I ever manage to get there again, I'd rent a car and do my own safari trip, where I can stop and wait for photo ops whenever and for how long I pleased. I can still vividly see the early morning picture that we "didn't have time to stop" for... A large male hyena standing on the edge of a small reddish cliff, surrounded by those flattish topped African savannah trees, apparently looking at the rising sun, or maybe just posing for any photographers whose brother-in-laws weren't in a hurry to get to some unknown destination where he might see the "big 5". |

You won't make that mistake again, at least. And my trip to Prague was full of shooting opportunities, except I was only sober for some of them. You need to practice shooting while drunk... Just back from a trip to Germany with a friend who never minds waiting while I work, and then another to Dorset with another friend who wants me to teach her photography ayway. Free assistants... Sounds like my day outing to Chichen Itza earlier this year. 3 hrs. actually. Next time I'll hire a car and driver and stay at a local hotel for the night.
