Default Missed Opportunities

This Saturday morning I took my youngest down to the Ski Boat Club on the
beach for a birthday party. While we were sitting around a yellow-billed
Kite came down on a thermal about 10m above us and hovered there in the
same spot for at least 15 minutes, only occasionally flapping his wings to
get back up into the off-shore breeze. He was looking for scraps from the
BBQ.

At one point the bird was directly above me and I was going nuts because
my main kit (D70 with the 70-200mm f/2.8) was sitting at home, charging
for the afternoon rugby match I was going to shoot. All I had with me was
my Canon F1 with 50mm & 28mm lenses and Kodak T400CN. Arrrrggghh!!!!

Moments like that don't happen often and I guess this was one of those I
have to chalk up to missed opportunites.

What's your biggest miss photographically?

A 4am fuel stop in France on the way to Italy, followed later by a another
stop in Switzerland, would both have yielded superb photo ops- except all my
film was loaded in the hold of the coach at the time.
And my trip to Prague was full of shooting opportunities, except I was only
sober for some of them.
Oh, and my entire family vacation- designed for elderly folks- to Scotland
would have been great for photos if the coach driver had ever wanted to stop
the coach.

This is why it's important to have like-minded friends to go on vacation
with...

I agree with vacationing with like minded friends. I have visited my
sister in South Africa a couple of times, and each time we took a safari
trip, with my brother-in-law doing all of the driving. He's not known
for his patience, and a lot of great photo opportunities were missed
because of his drive to get from point A to point B in the shortest time
possible. I decided that if I ever manage to get there again, I'd rent a
car and do my own safari trip, where I can stop and wait for photo ops
whenever and for how long I pleased.

I can still vividly see the early morning picture that we "didn't have
time to stop" for... A large male hyena standing on the edge of a small
reddish cliff, surrounded by those flattish topped African savannah
trees, apparently looking at the rising sun, or maybe just posing for
any photographers whose brother-in-laws weren't in a hurry to get to
some unknown destination where he might see the "big 5".

You won't make that mistake again, at least.

You need to practice shooting while drunk...

Now that I couldn't agree with more. Just back from a trip to Germany with
a friend who never minds waiting while I work, and then another to Dorset
with another friend who wants me to teach her photography ayway. Free
assistants...

Not speed tourism. Ok, you've travelled all day to see 'X', right back in
1 1/2 hours so we can pick you up and take you to some shops that sell the
same junk you can buy anywhere else...

What's your biggest miss photographically?

In a slight twist of the original question, my greatest photographic
missed opportunity would have to be realizing that I could have better
enjoyed (and taken more pictures of) the times of my youth that
recently passed before my eyes courtesy of a scanner:

Sounds like my day outing to Chichen Itza earlier this year. 3
hrs. actually. Next time I'll hire a car and driver and stay at
a local hotel for the night.

Cheers,
Alan
