Default Cell Phone Pics

I do a fail amount of digital photography with a quality camera, but my
question has to do with getting the best image quality from a cell phone
camera.

I realize that cell phones are not the ultimate in image quality.

My Verizon phone has a 1.3 mp camera built in. It is a LG 8100 and I set
it in the 1.3mp picture mode. To get a picture from the phone to my
computer I first upload the picture to Verizon and then download it from
the Verizon site. The Verizon service is very good, but when the pic
arrives on my computer it is about a 0.2mp jpeg image. Viewing the image
ISTM that the image has lost a great deal of quality (ie resolution).

Is there a way to improve the quality of the image that I get from
Verizon? Is there another (better) way to transfer the image from the
phone to my PC without going through Verizon and losing resolution?

Thanks

Jpeg pictures size does't apply to MP size since jpeg is a lossy
compression. What matters is what is the dimension of the pic when you
open it in an editor. I'm used to Photoshop and it tells you the true
picture size in the lower left of the picture window and in Image /
Image size. Irfanview show the image size in Image / resize - resample.
So you probably have a heavily compressed jpeg from a 2 megabyte image.
If that is how verizon handles it you are pretty much under their
control. Reason I have never considered a camera phone is that they
charge you to get your image from the phone, cameras with data cards
seem like a much better idea. Though I have heard of camera phones that
do use memory cards.

Prize for understatement of the year there.

Didn't you get any sort of wire which will connect your phone direct to your
PC?

Most cel providers don't give you the data cable, they prefer to sell it
to you. You can usually find them cheap on eBay, although those don't
always include the necessary software (BitPIM, DataPilot, etc.)

Just do an eBay search for 'lg 8100 data cable'. If the phone supports
Bluetooth, you may also consider a USB Bluetooth adapter for the computer.

I do not know Verizon, and do not need to. A JPG file produced by a
1.3Mpix camera will be about 0.2MB, depending on image content it can be
as low as 0.12MB. I doubt that you have lost any resolution (or
'quality') since neither the sensor nor lens have much. I use blue tooth
to transfer from my mobile phone.

I bought a $20 cell phone. No pictures, no video, no color screen. It gets a
good signal and performs as it should - a phone! I have 3 digital cameras
and my cheapest is 3mp, true zoom lens and is miles ahead of a cell phone
camera. And they gave me the data cable!

My wife's cellphone has Bluetooth capability and the manual implies that
it can transfer pictures to a computer that way. Don't have Bluetooth
on any of my computers though, so I can't verify this. The pictures
look pretty good on her phone screen.

HAH! Only if you PAY (and pay large).
And some cell phones produce 2-5mp images, which is quite enough for
most users. The problem is the tiny lenses in most of the phones, and
the lack of focus, and zoom ability, although this too is coming.
