ALERT - Serious Problem with Canon Rebates - dpreview
If you are about to send in a Canon rebate request READ THIS FIRST! From dpreview: Canon has asked US customers planning take advantage of its rebate program not to cash the checks they have received, following the company handling the rebates filing for bankruptcy protection. The problems relate to rebate checks for video and printer products dated prior to November 14th. Any customer yet to send-in rebate materials should also delay until further notice. Canon made the following statement: "The third-party rebate processing company that implements Canon’s rebate program covering printer and camcorder products filed a Chapter 11 Bankruptcy petition on Friday, November 14. Any customer who has received a rebate check for these products dated prior to November 14, should not cash the check as it may bounce. Canon is diligently working on steps to ensure that eligible consumers receive valid rebate checks as soon as possible. More information will be available on our Web site by Friday, November 21. "We understand this is an inconvenience to customers. We are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible. Consumers who have questions about our rebate programs should call Canon’s Customer Call Center 1-800-OK- CANON." more... http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=30069066 -- -- r.p.e.35mm user resource: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpe35mmur.htm -- r.p.d.slr-systems: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpdslrsysur.htm -- [SI] gallery & rulz: http://www.pbase.com/shootin -- e-meil: Remove FreeLunch. -- usenet posts from gmail.com and googlemail.com are filtered out. |

The bankrupt company is called Continental Promotion Group. Among the companies they handle(d) rebates for: Cingular/AT&T, Canon, Tiger Direct, Fry's Electronics, Staples, Logitech, Kensington, Hewlett Packard, Crucial, AVG, Nero, Panda AV, Smith Micro/Allume, Advance Auto Parts, Dell, Lowe's, Amazon, Sharp Electronics, Home Depot, Gateway, eMachines, Kragen Auto Parts, Tom Tom, Costco, TRENDNet. Obviously it would not be advisable to purchase items involving rebates from any of the affected companies without finding out how they are handling them in the wake of Continental's bankruptcy. And don't buy gift cards for Christmas presents either. Nor common stock, though it's unclear they are a public company at all. "Continental Promotion claims more than 500 national and international clients in 120 countries with offices in Tampa; Tempe, Ariz.; Toronto; and Tipperary, Ireland." Ouch. -- john mcwilliams |

That doesn't necessarily mean one couldn't buy common stock as an X-mas gift for the kiddies. If the company were public, that is..... -- john mcwilliams |

There are two kind of bankruptcy in the US: Chapter 11 and chapter 7. Chapter 7 is when the company is going away. The stock is (probably) worthless and assets are sold off to pay creditors. Chapter 11 is when the company is under court supervision and protection. The company reorganizes, creates a plan to pay off creditors, and gets court approval for its plan. In exchange they are protected from lawsuits for debts. Many companies do emerge from ch11 banruptcy to continue doing business as usual. Regardless, it is the problem of the company offering the rebates (Canon in this particular case) and they're going to fix the problem. Dealing without a bounced check just adds needless expense and trouble. -- Ray Fischer |

I'd love to see how many companies work themselves back from the brink. Don't know how many, but there are some notable examples on the list. Enron Texaco PG&E Delta Airlines -- Ray Fischer |

The BB is all but certain given the state of the universe today. What is less certain is whether the u continues to expand or whether there will be a big crunch. Thus the dark matter issue. As to Hawking radiation, it may be observed in the LHC once it's up and running next year (though it may take a few years for a micro BH to form, evaporate and the event actually recorded.) I hope it's observed. Hawking would certainly receive the Nobel Prize in Physics if it is observed. I just hope it's not posthumous. -- -- r.p.e.35mm user resource: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpe35mmur.htm -- r.p.d.slr-systems: http://www.aliasimages.com/rpdslrsysur.htm -- [SI] gallery & rulz: http://www.pbase.com/shootin -- e-meil: Remove FreeLunch. -- usenet posts from gmail.com and googlemail.com are filtered out. |
