I checked two weeks ago at one of their stores. There was nothing decent
for photographers, but that's hardly anything new where CompUSA is
concerned. I did pick up an 80GB Sony PS3 for $50 off; it was the same
price that other retailers are charging for the the 40GB PS3.

Is the whole business closing down, or just some selected stores? They
have suffered big customer losses in Austin since Fry's opened here a
few years ago. I have very fond memories of CompUSA goibg back about 25
years when it was a single store named Soft Warehouse in Addison, a
suburb of Dallas. They had an amazing selection of hardware and
software. I had to go to Dallas from Austin frequently, and whenever I
drove up I would go out there, time permitting. As it grew it stayed
interesting for a few years, but with Fry's here I won't miss them.

No, I did not find any deals with they closed the store in my city.

Since CompUSA was bought out by that foreign company, they have been
closing stores left and right. I personally go to Fry's.

CompUSA's web business and a number of their stores were purchased by
computer maker Systemax who also own Tiger Direct. They will operate the
web site and those stores under the CompUSA name, at least that is the
current plan.

When they shut down in Chicago, there were no deals.

First, their signs always said "up to xxx percent savings". None of
the stuff that anyone would buy ever made it up to the advertised
savings. Sure, cables, iPOD cases, nuts and bolts, etc, had some
fantastic savings, but anything I wanted, never got up to 25% off even
at the very end.

Second, it was like someone was buying the stuff in bulk. Whole
sections of the store would be closed off from one day to the next. It
was like they were transfering all the expensive stuff to the stores
that werent closing, or some ebay buyer bought everything.

I was waiting for printer supplies, ink, paper, etc, to get a decent
price and at the very end, they were only 25% off while the signs said
"up to 75% off". The stuff was still over priced compared to the what
you could find on the internet.

When it was all said and done, the very last items remaining was an
entire wall full of Epsom Printer mate printers.

BTW, Frys opened a store nearby too. I can see why compusa went out of
business.

Those "up to" words can make something sound better than it is.
Batteries that last "up to 4 years" if you don't use them etc.
Of course, "10 minutes" is contained in "up to 4 years" so the
words are truthful!

Don't think there's gonna be much in the way of deals since TigerDirect
bought up everything from Compusa.

None to write home about. My local store has had a "store closing"
sign up for about two weeks now. I don't really need anything right
now, but I've been visiting every few days to see if there's anything
worth grabbing. So far, no good. I was there this afternoon.
Laptops are only 10% off, and desktops are only 20% off. They never
had much in the way of photo equipment. A few P&S and some low end
DSLRs. Last week they had a Canon Rebel XTi, but their clearance
price was the same as regular retail at the Wolf Camera on the other
side of the shopping center.

With the price creep they've had in the past few years, the clearance
prices are pretty much the same as similar stuff available at the
local big boxes and the nearby Micro Center store. With the "all
sales final" and "no returns" signs all over the store I don't think
I'm going to get anything from them. Anything less than 40% to 50%,
which isn't very likely, and they can keep it.

Like a previous poster I have a long history with them, going back to
the Soft Warehouse days. In fact I bought my first computer from them
in the mid-80s. A 286 with a 40mb hard drive and 5.25 floppy drives,
that ran on DOS 5.0. Ah, the simpler days!

I guess I'll miss them, but not much. For the past 10 years or so
they've become the Radio Shack of the computer world. I just don't go
there unless there's something I really need and don't have time to
wait for an on line order.

Regards,
Sarge
