Default Scanner bake-off is done!!!

After a few hundred bucks, 100 (or so) hours of labour, and great
participation from around the globe, it's time to close this year's
bake-off. Thanks to all who have actively participated in the event.
It's apparent the effort was WELL worth while, as indicated by the
hundreds of emails of appreciation, constructive criticism, and
advice. In particular, I'd like to thank:

-Norman Koren for a great (and very timely) job on the Imatest
software.
-Bart van der Wolf for technical advice and input.
-Guy Tal for help with statistical analysis.

There's one other person who has asked to remain anonymous, whose
technical assistance was invaluable. (You know who you are.)

So, I'm done accepting applications to participate this year, as
enough results have been submitted to make the excercise well worth
while. I'll continue to publish results as they arrive though - so
please send in your scans if you haven't done so already.

For the next round in 2005, I'll send a slide of a nature scene -
something not so scientific. Then we can all pull out the stops and
create the best looking scan possible. This will be more of a
competition of combined skill, aptitude, and software, as opposed to
getting the "sharpest" scan. Stay tuned; I'll try to involve some
"heavy-weights" in the industry as a panel of judges. Should be fun as
well as controversial! Maybe sponsorship is in the books... ;-)

Thanks all...
