Not ones you click, but that are embedded and visible in the reader?

It happens from time to time, with folks unfamiliar with Usenet, and non-binary NGs such as r.p.d., or binary groups such as alt.binaries.photos.original, or alt.binaries.pictures.aviation.That is going to depend on the server, and Usenet client you use.

Considered that some Usenet servers do not support binary Groups of any type. I could be wrong, but for example, I do not believe that binary Groups are available via GoogleGroups. I use Giganews which does support binaries.

This wasn't a binary group, this was a regular group and the images were not
links, they were visible when the post was opened. If it's been around since
the 1990s it's a surprise since I've never seen it before.

I have seen the occasional image posted in a non-binary group by mistake, or
ignorance of the poster. I have also seen a few trolls who insist on posting
in HTML where it shouldn't show up at all.

It would have to be a script of some sort. Best view the source for a clue.

no it wouldn't.
