Default 3 years in jail for not registering RC aircraft. After 60 YEARS with no registrations

Anyone owning an RC plane over 0.55 lb who did not register with the FAA
by yesterday, Feb. 19, 2016, is in violation. According to the FAA
website, they may assess civil penalties up to $27,500, and criminal
penalties are up to $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 3 years.
Judging from the number of drone sales last Christmas and the low number
of registrations, a few million of us committed felonies today.

most of the drones that were sold don't count, which means very few
have committed a crime, but even if they did, there's no way to find
them. nobody is going to chase them down.

http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/faqs/

Note that the requirement is for RC pilots to register themselves, not
their individual aircraft. It also does not matter if you are actively
flying the plane. A dusty model on the shelf gets you the same violation.

nonsense.

Does anyone believe that Federal registration of model aircraft pilots
is any deterrent to a dedicated person with bad intent?

none whatsoever.

You should note that the slighly odd weight limit of 0.55lb is almost
exactly 0.25kg. The metric system is creeping up on you whether you
like it or not.

actually the limits for drone registration are between 250g-2500g, yet
it's stated in pounds not grams.

had the metric system been creeping up, it would not have been stated
in pounds.

it's also irrelevant.

I noticed that and the range is 0.55 to 55 lb which would be quite a
sizable drone at 25kg.

The reason they are still using pounds is because the majority in the
USA might not know what a gram is.

Anyway I thought it only applied to drones flown in national airspace.

Dopers know exactly, what a gram is.

It would be as a safety measure if they thought the reader was too
thick to understand what grams are.

unless you can give a reason for the well rounded figure of 0.55 to 55 ?

Is it to keep in line with telephone numbers which we in the UK know
all US numbers start with 555.

Phew! At least you won’t be calling me.

Dopers ?, always used imperial although they maybe changing slowly here on
the streets on ludun it's still an 'enry is the standard measuring "Henry
the eighth" is an 1/8th of an ounce is the commonest, but increasing sold
not by wieght but by cost ie £25 bag. Cocaine, Herion and speed, come in
wraps of about £10 worth rather than a weight as it's mostly used in clu
bs and is brought on the night buy the user.
My american flatmate used to get 200ml bottles of methadone from the chemi
st/pharmacy.
She used to buy her hash via one of those attending the drug re-hab clinics
.
I remmebr her askign me what a henry is.

Acid and esctasy come mostly on tabs/tablets there's no weight associated.

All is explained.
