Differences in US & UK English usage.
In my everyday life I *would* have typed 01-04-2011, but to make it
easier for someone who I assumed was on the other side of the pond to
understand, I put the month first (especially since he didn't seem to
pick up hints very quickly).

Certainly general US notation is Month-Day-Year. Hence, April the
First, 2001, vs. The First of April 2011. However US military date
convention is Day-Month-Year, I believe this was to remove the conflict
& confusion factor with our European Allies starting with WWI

French Canadians use that style, it can be confusing when using both American
and Canadian dates... I personally hate the 'all number' system, and prefer the
inclusion of the month as letters. Apl 1 is much clearer.

It's actually not how I say it. First of April is how I say it.
You've been trained to say it that way because you write it back
to front so it appears to be more natural. But it isn't logical.

LOL - 1911 is about where the imperial units of measurements of
distance, force etc are still being used too. It's actually 2011

Quite embarrassing when that sort of thing happens.

It is also good to note that since the inception of NATO and SEATO, the
US military has also adopted the metric system. Sometimes
standardization works.
