What is the product life of a D-SLR?
I am intrigued with the D200 which will be released for sale shortly.
How long a run will Nikon have with this camera based on past models? Ron -- And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right Where I belong I'm right Where I belong. Lennon & McCartney |

Canon dSLR's seem to be replaced with a newer/better model every 18 months or so. Not sure about Nikon, maybe a bit longer. It pays to buy early in the product cycle. Bill |

For the professional, the Nikon will last 2 or 3 years and then be junked after it's millionth picture. For the amateur, maybe 2 years until the next piece of jewelry comes out. |

I am not too sure that Bill's sugestion to buy early in the life cycle of any product is the wisest one. There may be faults, which will be fixed in later production runs. The initial price will be high, until all the "Must Have the Latest" get theirs. There is also very likely to be a considerable price reduction, as soon as Canon bring out their competing model, or reduce the price of their existing models. Roy G |

About two years. Product life is based more on psychology than engineering/reliability in the fast-moving (toy) arenas. I would like to buy a dishwasher that lasts 15 - 20 years but know that a digital camera could last that long but cannot see myself using it for such an extended period. The dishwasher is an appliance, but the camera is a toy. Automobiles are kind of in-between. TVs became mundane (like dishwashers) and now HDTV is being foisted upon us to move them away from the dishwashers and more toward the toy category. Don't you know that they are messing with our minds and our wallets and that we love it? |

This can't be right; I've never run a Nikon up to a million pictures, and all of the ones I have are over 2 years old. Most I've had more than 10 years, actually. (Amateur, though I do small bits of semi-pro work now and then.) Still interested in the d200, though :-) -- David Dyer-Bennet, , http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b/ RKBA: http://noguns-nomoney.com/ http://www.dd-b.net/carry/ Pics: http://dd-b.lighthunters.net/ http://www.dd-b.net/dd-b/SnapshotAlbum/ Dragaera/Steven Brust: http://dragaera.info/ |

Most I've had more than 10 years, actually. The question was about DSLR's. Nikon 35mm SLR product life seems to be about 8-10 years: Nikon F, 1959; F2, 1968; F3, 1979(?), F4, F5, F6 on about the same schedule. For DSLR's, the cycle is much shorter. And any Nikon you've had for 10 years is almost certainly not a DSLR (I'm not sure exactly when the E1 came out). |

DLSR's and P&S's are just like PC's were in the 1990's. Every 18-24
months you had to upgrade because of software or new features. Nikon introduced the D70 in 12/2003. In early 2005, they upgraded it to the D70S and put a new entry point with the D50. Now in 12/2005, they intro the D200. Do I need to update my 2 D70s's? They only have 10,000 and 4,000 shots on them. Nikon says that the D70 is good for 50,000 shots. Nope. Don't need to. But that D200 sure looks nice. See? |
