Default Source for lens shims?

Does anyone know of a source for the very thin round shims sometimes
used between a lens cell and the shutter? I think they're probably brass.
I'd like to replace one that was somehow mangled by a previous owner.
I figured I wouldn't bother trying to measure its thickness (well, thinness)
until I found a supplier. The idea of cutting one out of a thin sheet is a
bit daunting...

Thanks.

Steve

In the words of the immortal Homer Simpson, "D'oh". No, I didn't try them,
but I will. Thanks for reminding me to think once in a while...

FYI,

I checked S.K. grimes for a pair of shims for potential use with a
10-3/4" Artar. quoted price was about $60 each...

One possible source might be a local community college with a metal
working course. Contact the instructor and see if he would have one of
the students make the shim for you.

It'd be a good lesson, determining the thickness of the existing shim,
selecting the proper material and cutting the new shim to the
appropriate diminsions.

We had an old piece of equipment in the photo-lab at school lose a part.
Really obsolete, no parts available ...

Using the same part from another identical piece of obsolete equipment
as a pattern, we got the school's machine shop students to make the
necessary part.

Then make them out of those plastic lids from yogurt, etc., containers.

You can buy brass sheet in precise thicknesses from metal stockists as -
yep - shim brass. Making a round shim from it involves using a fly cutter
or an old (hand drill powered) washer cutter. Since it is brass, the hard
steel knives on the fly/washer cutter do the job neatly and don't leave a
burr.

Given the choice I too would rather buy than make - but if you can't find
what you want to buy, or the cost is silly, then making them isn't actually
as daunting as it at first seems.

I can give you an ambiguous reference you will need to pursue...as I
don't have a retail source, but it may give you ideas.

I have seen in previous aerospace employment stainless steel shims with
NSN (National Stock Numbers) and B240 series part numbers.

I know that there were some rather thin and at least 4" in diameter.

This may give you a lead, but a source I don't know.

I take that back...
http://www.materialfabricators.com/shims.html

If they can't sell you puny quantities of in-stock items, perhaps they
can refer you somewhere.

Thanks Murray, I'll give them a try. In the meantime, I was able to "iron out"
the wrinkles with a marble rolling pin, but it's good to know about this.
