Default Kaiser film retriever

I find I have a few of these Kaiser black plastic film retrievers,
from where I can't remember, but I have no instructions.

I've been fiddling with the things for a bit but I can't get them to
work. Utter failure. Not even a nibble.

Anyone have one and have gotten it to work, and if so, how?

OTOH, I have these $4.99 stainless steel ones, and they work a
champ, recommended.

Many, many years ago I used what looked like a similar retriever and I
recall similar difficulties. The angle of the tongue in the canister
was critical, and istr there was less than ~1mm tolerance in the
location of the film to get a good retrieval, so you may have to
experiment with the whole 'hear click - stop - slide lever - wind back'
process.

Forgive me for asking, but I presume you have read the instructions in
the pdf from that page..? Steps 5 and 6 are the ones that may require a
bit of 'touch' - are you feeling the film catch in step 6? If not, try
angling the device slightly differently and go very slowly. Also check
the little hook/s/tag/s (if it has them to catch the sprocket holes) to
make sure they aren't damaged, bent or burred.

OTOH, I have these $4.99 stainless steel ones, and they work a

So why don't you just use that one? (O:

Mine isn't Kaiser nor the other one, and yes it's sometimes difficult to
get a nibble. Eventually after a few tries even the worse case works.
You have to be able to feel the roll end backing up to the slot in the
cassette, and you have to be able to feel the film resisting the puller.

Most cases on the first try, however. (Haven't used one of these in a
couple years).
