the "old" HP goes by the name "Agilent." Sigh.

Double sigh.

I think DEC was partly done in by the fact that their
technical staff spent most of their days surfing, chatting,
and following listservs -- long before that sort of thing
became commonplace in the industry.

I did some consulting for DEC in '83-4 at the Springfield
plant when it was trying to make Aztec Winchester cartridge
drives: If the techies weren't on their terminals 'doing'
their email they were in group grope sessions 'working the
issues' (jawing off) trying to get other techies to 'buy
into the work' (get them to do your work for you).

In the whole plant I don't think I met one person who
actually _did_ anything.

That, and an incredible endowment of hubris.

Enough to make George W. blush.

But, hey, how about that awesome 4x5? I doona' ken:
a respectable Calumet sells for $150 on ebay - why
look farther?

Yep, I am a relative newbie. But then about the only place you had

access to
usenet more than a couple of years before that is at a University.

My Usenet access from 1983 on has always been through non-University
and non-Government sources.

Through something like America Online?

Nah -- the companies I worked for all had dialup access which connected
the old ADM-3A to the PDP-11 or VAX that (in turn) had scheduled
dial-up UUCP access to the local Usenet upstream. Not exactly the
fastest arrangement, but convenient enough to read Usenet with. Also,
an acquaintance of mine started what would become known a decade later
as an "ISP" with primitive commercial dialup Unix access for email
(UUCP-based, of course) and Usenet access in about 1983, which looks
remarkable in hindsight now.

In any event, I was using DECNet before the PC was invented.

You had DECNET?! Luxury... :-). I had occasional access to something
called CSIRONET, but the CSIRONET culture of the time considered things
like Usenet (and the whole Unix culture that surrounded it) a little
beneath them. Or so my horribly-biased memory remembers...

Remember those
things call mini-computers? How about that new-fangled lanugage called c
(assembler with manner)? DEC had it first. (Right folks? Where's all the
DEC chauvinists when we need 'em? Answer: SOLD DOWNSTREAM!)

Well, DEC made the PDP-11, on which much of the early commercial C
development was done, but C didn't come out of DEC. I first used C --
from Bell Labs -- when it didn't have such luxuries as "long" types
(you just used a two int struct...) and we ran Unix V6 on a small
PDP-11/35 or /45 with something like 5MB total disk space. No, I don't
get nostalgic -- I love what I can do with my G5 -- but I do have a
special place in my intellectual heart for the PDP-11s. Simple to
program in assembler, clean architecture, and, even with such
monstrosities as RSX-11 or RSTS, good application platforms for
engineers.

I wish. But I don't think shame or regret
are in dubya's emotional repertoire.

Horse puckey. DEC died for a number of reasons. Early on they had a hugely
competent, beautiful personal computer architecture but didn't make it
against that POS IBM made. Better does not often win against mediocracy.
While DEC has been assimulated, at least their OpenVMS operating system is
still a favorite for strident, high-security installations. You don't hear
much about that because it's not a mainstream concern.

Which reminds me that our comp sci major trashed our G5 over the weekend.
I got to find out how he did that. Hard drive failure. Utter through and
throug wasted. I got it back only by erasing it.

Me too. I had two 11/70s under RSTS/E with 750K RAM. Hit jobmax 63 every
day with good performance. And RT11 - love that little OS. But we digress.
Back to wooden cameras.
