Nikon 18-55 VR
I have been using the non VR 18-55 and have been generally happy with
the results. But have had several shots that later would have benefited from VR. Any one here have any experience with this new lens? Is the VR useful across the entire focal length range and at the largest apperatures? Is this the newest version of VR? Thank you -- With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. Steven Weinberg |

Thank you Yes, I have been shooting for about two weeks with the VR 18-55, and I'm really glad I spent the $200 (US). Sharpness and color rendition are every bit as good as the two older (non-VR) versions I've owned. Although I haven't really had the perfect low-light situation to torture-test the VR (I didn't take my camera with me to any of the casinos), I plan to do some hand-held one-eighth sec. and one-quarter sec. tests soon and will post results. Since I am well-satisfied with the VR on my modestly-priced 70-300 zoom, I see no reason why the shorter one would be any less satisfactory. -- "It is the individual alone who is timeless. I think you'll love the VR when you finally get around to torture testing it. I was at the Philly auto show last weekend, which is a great torture test for VR. Indoors with some low light situations photographing static objects (cars) close up, without a flash, handheld, at exposures like 1/15, 1/8, even 1/5 second and focal lenghts in the 18mm to maybe 30mm, f3.5, ISO 400 most of the time. I was actually wishing for a wider lens a lot. I usually take 3-5 shots burst and then view them on the LCD zoomed all the way in and delete the ones that are not sharp. I was getting only maybe 1 in 5 sharp shots with no motion blur and wondering what the *$&# is going on? So I checked and turns out I had accidentally left the VR off from the day before when I was doing something else, tripod mounted. I turned on the VR and then was getting 4 in 5 sharp shots. Steve |
