Large color pictures in Craig's List ads?

Not necessarily. In all the editors I use, changing the DPI has
absolutely no effect on file size. You have to change the absolute
size of the image in pixels (or the jpeg compression) to change the
file size. I suspect the editor you're using must tie PPI to pixel
dimensions in some way.

In a web image ad, if the display size of the image is unspecified in
the formatting of the web page, e.g. the html code, then the size
displayed will depend on the size of the image in pixels.

process converts them to the small size.

Your solution sounds reasonable. However, I have no idea what "html img/
tag" means. Text I put in my ad? I have web hosting from Tierranet, so I
can put my picture there, probably, and I know how to point to it.

You may not realize it but you're bringing this discussion closer to an
exchange I had some time ago in a.c.f. with Hummingbird.

He and I discussed pixel dimensions and it was the first of many bizarre
discussions I had with Hummingbird in which he seemed unprepared to
understand conventional terminology. Later I saw it was one of his k00k
tricks.

In that discussion, Hummingbird's way of defining terms such as "pixel
height" was so contrary to normal practise that I called the thread
"Humpty with Alice" because Humpty had said this:

"When I use a word it means just what I choose it to

The img tag is html code that you put as text in your ad. Craigslist
allows it. So you would do something like this:

Here's a picture of my item:

img
src="http://www.tierranet.com/url/link/to/my/reasonably/sized/picture.jpg"
alt="text describing my item to display while the picture is loading"
width="number of pixels wide" height="number of pixels high"
----

And then when someone's browser displays your ad, the img tag gets
replaced with the jpg picture at the link in the src part of the
element. The width, height and alt are optional and don't need to be
there. They just make things look nicer while the picture is loading.
