Default Why Hassy 503CW instead of Hassy 503CXi?

Used Hassies 503CXi are about half the price of a (used) Hassy 503CW,
yet CXi seems to take the CW winder (unless I am wrong), and is almost
indistinguishable from the newer camera. Any thoughts or comments
greatly appreciated.

Well,
I can only Half-A-- answer the question or contribute an incomplete
reply/opinion. I have a fairly new 501 CM and love it But really wanted the
OTF Flash metering occasionally and purchased a super nice/super clean 503
CX (Not the Winder capable CXi ) for $500. I really like the flash metering
on the 503 and/but have no desire for a winder. Ok- the 501 has the Gliding
Mirror and the CX supposedly does not. I can not see the advantage (non
vignetting) of the GMS on my longest lens which is a 150 CFi. Sooo, as not
to properly answer your question---Go for the CXi as I assume it has not the
current GMS setup with little difference other than that.
A Happy 503 CX user.
I'm sure I'll be flamed ASAP for any incorrect info.

Good Luck!!

Vignetting will occur with the 150 + extension tube, or with 250 and
500mm lenses. I use both 250 and 500 frequently and got the 503CW as a
result. The winder capability is nice, and the OTF capability is only
useful if you use a Hassy ttl flash or Metz w/ adapter.

Thanks. Is it true that CW's focusing screen seems brighter when
compared to the CX's or CM's ?

The 250 and 500 lenses are 5.6F and 8F respectively? How do you use them
with a 2 X adapter, which, I understand, loses 2.5 stops? Are you
always using minimum aperture (32 or so) with the adapter? I understand
that minimum aperture detracts from image quality.

Not as far as I can tell. I have the same 42165 screen in both
cameras.

The screens on my 503CX and 501 CM are of the current Accute-Matte
variety (No flamers here--My 503 CX has the Accute-Matte). Being I use a 150
as my longest lens the CX presents no problem. I have extension tubes but
have only used them on the 501 CM with the 150. I would love to try a 250
lens though and would use my CM as I really doubt I would use the 250
handheld with my D40. I DO NOT use, have or desire a teleconverter. My
initial investment was the nicely priced 501 CM Kit (with the 80 mm) and
I've purchased more lenses (50 mm C T*, 120 Makro Planar T*and 150 CFi)
with only the 503 CX as my other body plus a D40. It has suited my needs
quite well using my D40. As the previous poster mentioned the OTF metering
is only good using the D40 or flash dedicated to the metering via a flash
adapter -Otherwise the 501 CM suits well--unless the need for the winder.
You do need to consider YOUR needs as to the camera you will require. As
stated the 501 CM is fine unless you need the OTF flash metering (which I
really do like with my D40) or the winder (which I have not a need for).
Hey, my choice works well for me! Yes I really do like the Hassy gear and
used lenses can be bought cheaper now than ever with the Dig SLR boom. My
equipment has operated flawlessly over the years. 503CXi or 503 CW ? If in
doubt I guess go for the CW or then again try out the CXi on the used
market--If it fails to meet your needs sell it on ebay.
HMMM! I didn't help you a bit did I ?????????????????????

It does.
But why would you want to stop these lenses down that far at all? They
perform very well wide open, and stopping down will only increase the
shallow depth of field by a rather modest amount. If you don't need to close
the aperture for exposure purposes, don't.

The way to use both lenses you mention, with or without 2x converter, and
all other lenses too, is on a good sturdy tripod. That will make a huge
differences to sharpness.
You need not worry about diffraction degrading image quality at f/32 while
using your camera off-tripod. No matter how well-trained you are, shake will
affect image quality far worse.
