Default 1.6x body a complement to FF?

Does it make sense to use a camera like a 40D as a backup/complement to a
FF, like the 5D? Seems that the 40D would offer extra reach with telephoto
lenses, costs less than another 5D.

Thanks.

To me it makes perfect sense as long as you can get the "angle of view" you
need (wide angle).

Of course it does. In that scenario, I'd consider the 5D as the
backup.

It can be a good complement, if you do sports photography (for example),
the x1,6 crop factor can be helpfull !
