Olympus D-520 macro shots

I have an Olympus D-520, and tried taking closeup photos
of some electronic devices, connections, coins, etc
Can't get a real closeup. ie - I'd like a coin to be full frame.

The D-520 won't focus any closer than about 8 inches and the zoom
doesn't help,
as it zooms in, but then is out of focus.
Not exactly sure what the "flower" macro mode actually changes,
as I don't see any difference from about 1 ft away from the object.

So, I was wondering how you get the great macro closeups ???
Do other P&S digitals have better macro capabilities ?

Have you tried a close up lens?
