Whatever your feelings about HDR, I found these "vertoramas"
stunning.

I was wondering that myself. I was a bit surprised that the article
gave as much technical information as it did!

This does show what HDR should be used for, but what to you mean by projection ?

And what do you mean by that, are you asking if a tilt perspective lens was used ? I thought stichting sort of negated that perspective

Usually, when using Photoshop, or Lightroom, and some other software for stitching panoramas, or mosaics from multiple frames you will have the option of selecting a *Projection*. That will be either *Spherical*, *Cylindrical*, or *Perspective* depending on your tolerance for warping, and/or distortion in your final image. Some will make the selection for you in a sort of *Auto stitch* which is what is delivered in some phone, and compact cameras.

Placing, and stretching the various pano, or mosaic frames on a sphere, or a cylinder will correct some of the distortion to allow stitching. If perspective is chosen, each frame is warped to allow stitching, and can result in an awkward, and very unnatural appearance. To my eye it looks as if the projection used in those images was some sort of *Perspective* projection.

The other factor to be considered is the lens being used, if it is too much of a wide angle, the distortion might be too severe to stitch successfully using any software, and the result will be an impossible distortion.

You have a few pano dedicated softwares like Hugin or AutoPano.
